(3 Customer Reviews)
All beloved new age composer David Arkenstone's works carry some heroic or mythic theme, but on this 2007 release, he really lets fly with the heraldic glory. The three-disc package includes a beautiful DVD and two audio discs that are designed to be played simultaneously. The effect of this total multimedia immersion is spectacular.
Personnel: David Arkenstone (bass guitar); Jeffrey Gunn, Kathleen Fisher (vocals); Jean Sudbury (mandolin); Dov (viola); Susan Craig Winsberg (flute); Seth Osburn (accordion); John Wakefield (drums).
David Arkenstone Mythys And Legends Songs Mythys And Legends Music Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) 2 copies of the same songs It's a good album except, why would anybody want to put together 2 cds with the same songs on them? That's unusual. Submitted by Jamie (Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
GREAT ALBUM AND CONCEPT David Arkenstone continues to deliver with moving and inspiring compositions that allow you to immerse yourself in them. In spite of what is said on this site, Arkenstone certainly does more than play bass guitar, anyone who has followed Arkenstone knows this, but CD Universe should pick up on this too.
Anyway, wonderful recording. You should pick it up immediately. Submitted by dreamer (COLORADO) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Classic Arkenstone If you've never heard Arkenstone's music before and want to get a sense of his wide range of styles, this is a good album to listen to. While it's not his best album, it's still very good. (Although I would have liked more tracks instead of the pointless second CD and DVD.) $12.39 The title of this television-advertised compilation may be arrogant, but then the tango is not a dance for the shy and retiring. Whether or not it is, as it claims, The Best Tango Album in the World, Ever!, the two-disc set, containing 30 tracks and running a little less than an hour and a half, does feature some major performers of the music, notably Carlos Gardel, renowned as the father of the tango, heard performing "Volver" and the concluding vocal version of "Mi Buenos Aires Querido," and Astor Piazzolla, who used the tango as a vehicle for composing modern classical music, heard performing "La Rayuela." Other notable performers include Carlos Garcia & His Orchestra, heard ...
| | David Arkenstone Atlantis CD (2004)
Mythys And Legends songs
$11.69 A musical tour of the mythological underwater continent, ATLANTIS bears all the hallmarks of New Age composer David Arkenstone's craft. A rich combination of instruments and orchestral colors, rolling percussive and melodic motifs, and a flair for rich cinematic sweep, ATLANTIS comes to life before the listener's ears. The album is so detailed, dramatic, and grand in scope, that it is not difficult to imagine it as the soundtrack to a major Hollywood ...

| | Oscar Lopez Heat CD (1997)
Mythys And Legends CD music
$12.15 Oscar Lopez's brand of nouveau flamenco (for want of a better term) pushes the nylon-string classical guitar beyond its physical boundaries. Heat is similar in sound to the albums of Ottmar Liebert, exploding with Latin and flamenco dance rhythms, yet never losing the definition of guitar fingering and melody. Lopez plays both lead and backup guitars, plus some percussion on some tracks, but the dubbed mix has the animal-edge of a live recording. Heat begins with "Forgive Me," with its churning samba-type beat; the lyrical melody rides the beat like with the grace of gauchos racing across the plains. "Thinking of You" floats on a smoother rhythm, while "Sentimiento" slows the pace ...

| | Mark O'Connor Live In New York CD (2005)
Mythys And Legends album
$13.39 Violinist Mark O'Connor's third recording with his Hot Swing Trio is more than just a tribute to the great Stéphane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt, as it also showcases the leader's compositions. Joined by ex-Grappelli bassist Jon Burr and guitarist Frank Vignola (who is influenced by Reinhardt though his style range extends much farther), the trio shows the influence of the Quintet of the Hot Club of France while incorporating their individual styles into old favorites like "Fascinating Rhythm," and "Ain't Misbehavin," though the chugging, bluesy setting of "Don't Get Around Much Anymore" is hard to beat. Among O'Connor's many originals, the demanding "Gypsy Fantastic" (which one can easily imagine Grappelli and Reinhardt playing), "Fiddler Going Home" (a moving tribute to Claude "Fiddler" Williams) and the deliciously loopy "Funky Swing" are all highlights. But all is eclipsed by the virtuoso display of musicianship in O'Connor's ridiculously up-tempo arrangement of the old chestnut "Tiger Rag." Highly recommended! ~ Ken Dryden
If hard bop and Dixieland can have their neo-classicists and nostalgia lovers, there is no reason why Gypsy swing shouldn't have them as well -- and in fact, Europe is full of Gypsy swing artists who faithfully emulate Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli's classic recordings of the 1930s and 1940s. But not all Gypsy swing artists are stuck in the past, and not all Gypsy swing artists are based in Europe. Mark O'Connor, in fact, is a Seattle-born violinist whose Hot Swing Trio often combine a passion for Reinhardt and Grappelli's legacy with a big dose of Americana. Recorded at Manhattan's Merkin Hall in 2004, Live in New York is fairly unpredictable and ranges from performances that are lovingly Paris-like to performances that are much more mindful of Americana -- specifically, American country and American bluegrass. The group billed as Mark O'Connor's Hot Swing Trio (O'Connor on violin, Frank Vignola on guitar, and Jon Burr on bass) brings a strong ...
