| | Oscar Peterson Mastercuts CD Oscar Peterson Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
As Oscar Peterson passed away late in 2007, this will likely be the first of many collections of his work issued posthumously. But there are many that preceded his passing, and in that vein, they keep on coming. What distinguishes one from another is marginal, for they all feature bunches and bunches of standards played in O.P.'s virtuosic way, with scant few originals, in this case "Oscar's Boogie." A substantive single-CD collection, it features quite a few show tunes, and a stack from the songbook of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart. Duke Ellington is also well represented at the tail-end of these 18 tracks. It's hard to fault much of anything done by Peterson because he was so great, but you'll find many other essential compilations of his artistry, which is unparalleled. ~ Michael G. $8.85 This ten-track set contains essential sides from the classic rock blues and boogie combo Canned Heat, culled from their first four long-players: Canned Heat (1967), Boogie With Canned Heat (1968), Living the Blues [Akarma] (1968), and Hallelujah (1969). Notably, this discounts Canned Heat Cookbook (1969), a hits package that cashed in on their association with the Woodstock Music and Arts Fair, and was the first LP to contain the single "Going up the Country." The core personnel during this seminal run includes Alan "Blind Owl" Wilson (guitar/vocals), Larry "The Mole" Taylor (bass), Henry "Sunflower" Vestine (guitar), and Bob "The Bear" Hite (vocals). Frank Cook (drums) stayed long enough to play on their eponymous debut LP, and was replaced by Aldolfo "Fido" Dela Parra (drums) prior to Boogie With Canned Heat (1968). The Heat's interpretations of both blues standards, such as Muddy Waters' "Rollin' & Tumblin'," or the funky update of Wilbert Harrison's "Let's Work Together," were lauded for their uncanny authenticity. With an almost cerebral respect for their craft, few ...

$14.45 G.G. Allin may just have been rock's premier carnival freak. Which is, all freaks considered, saying a lot. But for anyone who caught his act, or saw the documentary Hated, it would not seem such an outlandish claim. And like all great carnival freaks, it's hard to tell where the deformity ended and the cosmetics began. While Rock 'N' Roll Terrorist may not help solve this conundrum, it does provide an excellent -- though rather repetitive -- sketch of this guttersnipe enigma. Repetitive in that, once you've heard six or eight tracks/rants, you may feel like you've heard them all. And there's good reason for that. Again and again G.G. screeches about how much he hates the world and everyone in it; how he has his own perverse, "revolutionary" agenda; how he is prepared to commit any depraved act against any man, woman, or child; how violent death (preferably suicide) is the ultimate expression of non-conformity. Pretty quickly, one is inclined to believe that Allin's just utterly desperate to go "over the top" but doesn't quite have the ...

$13.15 WOW! Sounding like they could've been on Andrew Oldham's great Immediate label back in the late 60's, this is top notch guitar and Hammond fueled Mod/garage pop rock outta France! The band formed in 1995 out of the gathering of musicians coming from various garage bands (among which Stinky Spider) and have reached their present state after the arrival of two new recruits, François and Xavier (ex-Looneys), a buoyant organist and jumpy performer on stage. The sound of the band was then deeply modified with the organ flying high over the beats. On this 12-tracker, they dish out nine tasty originals along with blistering covers of "She's Not There" by The Zombies, "Brainwashed" by The Kinks, and "Mrs. Applegate" by The Apemen! Originals like "Silly Thing" start out all Kink-ish, then go into a Yardbirds-like "rave up"! "Book Of Yours" is very Who-like! "Mr. mac Bee" makes great use of the "Taxman" (Beatles)/"Start" (The Jam") trademark riffs combined with an original twist all their own! They expertly display Freak Beat, elegant ties, vocal harmonies, Vespa scooters and British beats all at once in one extremely tight bundle! These guys will appeal "immediate"ly (no pun intended) to fans of The Prisoners, The Kinks, The Who, The Small Faces, The Green Circles and great organ-laced garage pop in general! Can't say enough about this one! GREAT!!
