Rebounding from the slight sophomore lag generated by 1998's EMBRYA, Maxwell's follow-up NOW abandons the neo-soul man's usual M.O. of using a conceptual arc of songs, and instead focuses on individual cuts. We played mostly in the Akron & Cleveland, Ohio region. At the same time, I also had a small club solo act that consisted of songs by John Denver, Cat Stevens, Neil Young and other pop artists of the day. The songs on this album along with some others I had written were mixed into the sets of the other music. Now and then though, I would get a concert performance where the songs on this album were featured. One such gig was at a place called the Boston Mills Ski Lodge near Cleveland. Now, one doesn't generally think of Cleveland, Ohio as a "Ski Town" but south of the city there is a valley where the Cuyahoga River cut deep enough to allow a couple of ski resorts to exist. At that time, Boston Mills was bringing in live music and one of the featured acts was a band you might have heard of called "Raspberries" or their lead singer Eric Carmen. I was booked in by the lodge to open their show and play during their breaks. At that time, they were already nationally known recording artists and my gig there went on for several weeks. It was probably the closest I came to a big time show although our band had some significant performances in those days.This Album was recorded in the back room of a home in Akron, Ohio in 1972. It is a live room recording in that there was no over dubbing and a strait run of each song with just me, my guitar, a mic, and an aspiring young recording engineer named Bruce Bartlett and his stereo reel to reel recorder. The master I got and asked for was a left track only since the only play back machine I had was mono. I'm sure we used the left track to keep with the political climate of those days. As an aside, there is a popular recording arts book on the market today called "Practical Recording Techniques" by Bruce and Jenny Bartlett published by "Focal Press". I wonder if it's the same guy. I probably should check that.Only a few people had heard this album before it was published here at CD Baby in 2006. That is, the master reel was never copied and sat in a brief case for over 30 years.
