| | Little Walter His Best CD (1997)
Mad River
$8.15 Few would dispute that this collection is the Holy Grail of blues harmonica. Like the other entries in Chess Records' HIS BEST series, the Little Walter compilation is beautifully selected, sequenced, remastered, and packaged. At 20 tracks, HIS BEST gives a satisfying, economical summary of Walter's genius, and defends his title as the king of blues harp men. As a member of Muddy Waters's band, and on his own, Walter was one of the architects of the original Chicago sound. His propulsive chording, high-leaning notes, inventive use of amplification (he used a close-up hand-held microphone and effects like distortion and echo), and endless stream of ideas expanded the possibilities of the harmonica.
With the help of such Chicago heavy-hitters as pianist Otis Spann, ...
| | Tommy Castro Hard Believer CD (2009)
Mad River
$14.25 Castro's first album recorded for mighty blues indie Alligator
You might think that Castro's first album recorded for mighty blues indie Alligator--and twelfth overall --would mark a departure for this longtime rocking soulman. But despite a fuller sound, fleshed out with Lenny Castro's percussion and boosted by an ever-present horn section led by longtime cohort Keith Crossan, this is another typically solid effort from the singer/guitarist. Veteran producer/musician John Porter returns to join Castro's strong, husky vocals--a cross between Delbert McClinton, James Brown, and Bob Seger--to a rather slick, ...

Denny Reed and Doug Spickler have similar backgrounds having come out of several horn bands in the Hagerstown, MD area. Evan Lee has been a long time friend with experience mainly in the recording studio. The influences for the group include Steely Dan, Robben Ford, Kansas, Allman Brothers, Pat Metheny, and Santana. Although the recording is a studio recording, the songs are composed on the spot and played in one take. | | Hammers Newark Fried Chicken CD (2006)
Mad River
$17.75 Formed in 1986, THe Hammers are one of Northern New Jersey's longest running rock'n'roll bands. With influences steeped in blues, rockabilly and R&B, their unique sound is the gumbo of three distinctly different musicians:singer/guitarist/songwriter Ira Spinrad, bassist Dom Zarrillo and drummer Bob Masucci. The band is road-tested,having played just about everyvenue, bar, restaurant and roadhouse in the area. They make their formal recording debut with Newark Fried Chicken. Released in September 2006, the disc draws on the group's varied backgrounds. Spinrad is an R&B and soul fanatic who lists Chuck Berry, Big Joe Turner and Jerry Lee Lewis among his creative inspirations. Zarrillo adds a blues element to the equation, while Masucci is strongly influenced by rockabilly, jazz and the Jersey Shore sound.Together, they have satisfied many an audience looking for a great band to drink beer and dance to. The group mixes and matches their influences superbly on Newark Fried Chicken. Recorded at Coyote Studios in Brooklyn,N.Y. the set is mainly comprised of inventive Spinrad originals that connect contemporary sensibilities with classic influences. Witty, sardonic blues tunes like "You're Right(Married Life),"and "Subsidize Me" are interspersed with vintage-flavored rockers like "Rippin and Runnin," "Since You Messed ...
