Writer, composer, singer, Jean Sanon Lamour – San - was born in Pétion-Ville, Haiti. As a child, San discovered music in his parents’ library where he found songs of different material, which he learned without even understanding the words. On his own, San started to sing and play the guitar, before joining the National Arts School where he studied music for some time. But what has made San the artist he has become is his ability to diversify his style and to mix the different sounds which continue to influence him. At the beginning of 2000, San became public thanks to the group Sokute, which already introduced a new musical concept, merging soul music with Haitian rhythms. With Sokute, San went on stage in Port-au-Prince at Café des Arts, at the French Institute in Haiti, as well as at the Roots Rock Reggae and the Rolling Stone Café; in Miami at the Roots and Culture Festival; and more importantly in Canada at the Francofolies de Montréal, at Festival Vues D’Afrique, and at Clubs such as Balattou and Zest. After 10 years as a musician, San now presents us with a new face in Haitian music: he is back on the world music scene with a new project : San & GRIOT SPIRIT (The Griot Spirit). Naturally, the name of the project refers to the traditional musicians and poets of Africa. It also comes within the scope of Haitian native art and to the roots of the Haitian culture. In fact, it is from his ancestors that San gets his new inspiration, and creates an hybrid, afro-pop sound, with traditional Haitian rhythms merged with world rhythms, and influenced by American folk, roots rock reggae and blues creole. To the sound of Haitian drums, his music leaves freedom to experiment and improvise. In his songs, where he speaks of identity, unity, freedom and equality, one can feel the influence of Paul Simon, Tracy Chapman and Ben Harper. San (Griot Spirit) has been on stage with Bélo and Boukman Eksperyans in Haïti and at the World Café Live in Philadelphia and at Club Balattou in Montreal; with Emeline Michel, Luck Mervil and Beethova Obas at the Broward Community College in Fort Lauderdale, as well as at the French Institute in Haiti and at Fondation Konesans ak Libetè (FOKAL).The music of San & GRIOT SPIRIT goes to a new level on stage everywhere they play in the world when they stir the public to their new vibration. | | Steel Pulse True Democracy CD (1982) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Griot Spirit
$9.29 This 1982 release, Steel Pulse's first for Elektra, marks the band's move toward a more buoyant, pop-inflected sound. TRUE DEMOCRACY does not have the edgy roots feel of albums like HANDSWORTH REVOLUTION; instead, it demonstrates the group's synthesis of reggae rhythms with high production values and well-crafted melodies. But while the album's stylistic corners may be sanded for radio-ready accessibility, TRUE DEMOCRACY contains some of the band's boldest, most explicitly political songwriting.
The opener, "Chant a Psalm," invokes the names of biblical figures ...

| | Siochain Disturbing The Peace CD (2006)
Griot Spirit
$18.99 Síocháin (pronounced Shee'-a-kawn, meaning peace in Gaelic) is Celtic Rock band based out of Indianapolis, IN. Although the name may mean peace, the band's entertaining music will do more to disturb the peace! Síocháin blends Celtic instrumentation (bagpipes, fiddle, bodhrah) with the high energy of rock to produce some wonderfully powerful music. Síocháin performs music from a wide range of Irish and Scottish groups, along with their own renditions of some of Ireland & Scotlands finest songs. The band has performed with groups such as The Fenians and Gaelic Storm; they've performed at Irish festivals in the Midwest and appeared on television. With the group's growing popularity, they have been in high demand throughout the Midwest, and have quickly developed a strong fan base. “Siochain is without doubt one of our most popular bands to grace the stage at TJ Maloney’s. Every time they play its standing room only, their energy is contagious and our regulars count the days for their return especially the ladies. If cloning was legal we would have them play every Saturday such is there popularity here in NW Indiana. Our web-site gets more hits the week they are about to play than even when The Fenians and Glengarry Bhoys are in town and that is testament to the hard work they put into every performance. I have no doubt in a couple of years they will be one of the top 5 Celtic acts in the US if they stay true to there roots.” Ciaran Kelly – Mgr. TJ Maloney’s Irish Pub, Merrillville, IN"Siochain is creating dominance on the Midwest Celtic Rock scene and has developed a huge fan base in the Indianapolis and Central Indiana area. Fionn MacCool's Irish Pub of Fishers, Indiana is proud to refer to them as our regular house band ever since we opened our doors for business playing at our Grand Opening event in October 2005.Siochain is energetic and powerful. They are extremely entertaining; whether they are performing at large event festivals or on our stage at the pub, they draw a large number of regulars and many new faces from around the Midwest. Some of our guests are initially surprised at how a combination ...

Griot Spirit
$24.69 Welcome to Lotte Landl and her beautiful, traditional zither melodies...“Travelling the world in my imagination while recording this album was a lot of fun. Come with me now and enjoy the traditional music I love from countries around the world. Here is a chance for us to dream of distant places, kicking up our heels to dance and sing along. The Zither is really quite a fascinating instrument and choosing a range of international songs to play can be quite a challenge. Fortunately, I can play the guitar in a limited style and I’m very pleased with the outcome of combining the two instruments for this recording. Liebe Gruesse, Lotte. P.S. We might travel again soon.”------------------------------------------------Lotte’s music transports you back... back to the beautiful Enns Valley in Styria, to the old farmhouse built in 1092 AD, to her 12 brothers and sisters on long winter nights, tinkling the zither around a big open fire. Lotte’s very first solo recording was dedicated to her 12 sisters and brothers who were orphaned at a very early age. Track one ‘Mondnacht ist’, was apparently her mother’s favourite song which made it most suitable as the first track!Growing up without parents t here was always singing in the house. An old guitar in the corner of the corner table and songs and yodelling were continuous. Captured on these two special compilation CDs... Zither Melodies - especially for you... plus Snowcapped Zither Melodies Down Under are some of these moods to rekindle your own fond memories.Lotte describes, “I found an old zither in our loft, it had no strings but I knew somehow it was supposed to have strings. I was told that Mamma played as a young girl and it was her zither. I wanted to hear some sound out of this instrument and found some very long horse hairs that I somehow wound onto this thing. It made little fluffy sounds. So, I wanted this zither fixed up and began to beg for it to be made up. I was then about 11. There was no money for anything like this, but I didn’t give in, I promised to go and learn from the village zither teacher Frau Danklmaier.”“Somehow I succeeded, the instrument was fixed and I started lessons. They of course also were not free. It was arranged, that for payment for the half hour per week I would take a litre can of milk from our farm. So, for two years, come hail or snow or sunshine, I walked with my little zither in one hand and a can of milk in the other, a good half hour to my teacher. She was strict and stood on the various occasions with a ruler in her hand, ready for a bit of ‘teaching me the hard way’. She was happy with me and suggested I go to Vienna’s conservatory to carry on seriously with music. But this definitely was out of the question for there was no money for something quite like that.”Lotte left home as there was nothing for all of the children to do or learn and she started working in restaurants, waitressing mainly, taking her little zither with her wherever she went and she developed a popular following.“I met my Australian husband in this ski resort ‘Wagrain’, where I ...
