Zahlu is a vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, who performs and records with his band "The Alchemists of Sound". He also records and performs in solo accoustic mode. His varied influences in music are Rock, Metal, Powergroove, Funk, Blues, Roots, Eastern, Spanish and Tribal music. Favourite artists include; Incubus, A Perfect Circle, The Tea Party, Audioslave, Porcupine Tree, Monster Magnet, Pearl Jam, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, The Doors, The Beatles, INXS and U2.Born in Sydney Australia, Zahlu showed a strong interest in music at an early age and started playing guitar and writing songs at 15. He formed his first band at 16, who played their debut gig at Sydneys famed Harbourside Brasserie. Zahlu crafted his sound in Sydneys live music scene, playing in various bands, from the late 80s through to the late 90s. In 2000 Zahlu relocated to Byron Bay, where creative inspiration is in abundance. To date Zahlu has produced and released various CDs independently which are available. "Citizen of the Universe"(2004), "Alive in Byron Bay"(2002-2007),"Solo Acoustic Sessions Phaze 3"(2001-2006)" and recently "Phaze Five"(2007). He Actively tours the East coast of Australia, busks in the outdoors of Byron Bay, and is always jamin’ writing, performing, living and breathing music. The band formed in 2002 starting as a rock/funk improvisation project. Their sound gradually settled and their initial tunes were pieced together from sections of long jams they had recorded. Later, songs would be written following a more conventional process. In 2003 the band won the National Campus Bands Competition, joining the ranks of past winners such as Jebediah, Eskimo Joe and George. The competition helped them finance their debut independent CD "Safe No Rebounds" in 2004, a six track oddity featuring songs ranging from power pop to klesmer and metal. Biography and Background Some of life's most powerful interests and avenues of expression begin at an early age. In my case, the desire to play the guitar started at the tender age of eight. A neighbor first exposed me to the wonders of this marvelous instrument, and watching her play immediately sparked my interest. At that point in life, I was hooked and knew that music would play a major role in later years. It took little convincing to persuade my parents to purchase a guitar so that I could begin learning the art. The first one I held was a modestly priced instrument, red, white and blue, of questionable quality, but certainly adequate at that stage of my musical development. Looking back on that time, I now realize that many youngsters have not been as fortunate as I. Children have an innate need for expression, but frequently they are not afforded the opportunity for a variety of reasons. In my case, I was provided with an avenue of expression - music - and that has led to enormous fulfillment and personal satisfaction. Essential to my development as a musician was formal instruction, which began shortly after I was introduced to the guitar. With tremendous motivation and dedication, even at that young age, I made rapid progress in my studies. By the time I had reached early adulthood, my talents were such that I was able to enter into collaboration with like-minded musicians, eventually leading to the creation of a band focusing on cutting-edge experimental rock and heavy metal.
