Charles Jordan might not be a name you recognize unless you've paid close attention to the Milwaukee music scene for quite a while. The singer, guitarist and songwriter was a member of The Nerve Twins in the 1980s and later was a member of Soda and did a brief stint as drummer in Maki. While he set music aside for a while to open Foundation, a Riverwest bar, most everyone he'd worked with over the years had moved on. So, although Jordan could still be found every day at Foundation, 2718 N. Bremen St. -- and despite the fact that he continued to write music -- he had basically disappeared from the Milwaukee music world. But that has changed and under the name Knit Delicate, Jordan has released "Pressed," a CD that a mutual friend has called one of the two best local discs of the past year.Jordan went to Richmond, Va., to record the disc with former cohorts Tim Buckley, John Daniels, Al Weatherhead and Miguel Urbitzondo (aka Mickey Rodridguez and Mickey Rad in his Milwaukee days). Those cats have worked with the likes of Sparklehorse, Cracker,Hotel Lights, Clem Snide, and Lucero since leaving Milwaukee about a decade ago.Melodic and poppy but with a satisfying slate of crunchy, jangly and twangy guitars, "Pressed" is an addictive mix of power pop and garage rock with alt.country overtones. Pressed album
$14.38 Glitter and Doom Live, a double-disc set, marks Tom Waits' third live effort in his nearly 40-year career, each one summing up his career to the point of its release. The first, Nighthawks at the Diner issued in 1975 on Asylum, is regarded by many as one of the greatest live albums of all time. The second was Big Time, released during his tenure at Island in 1986. The musical performances on disc one of Glitter and Doom Live were culled from Waits' historic sold-out tour of the U.S. and Europe. He compiled and sequenced the set himself, intending to make them sound like a single show. The material leans, understandably, on his recordings with the Anti label. There are stellar performances here, such as "Get Behind the Mule" from The Mule Variations, "Trampled Rose" from Real Gone, and a haunting version of Leadbelly's "Fannin Street" from Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards, to mention just three of the 17 cuts here. But he goes back to his Island albums too. For instance, there are completely re-visioned readings ...

| | King Crimson In The Court Of The Crimson King CD (1969) Bonus Tracks
Pressed album
$102.39 Initial pressings featured a limited edition, cardboard-stock gatefold sleeve and unpublished archive photos.
KC's debut album introduced to the world a group that threw various '60s genres into a blender and set the results afire with a blowtorch. One of the pioneers of the progressive rock movement that began in the late '60s and flourished in the early '70s, King Crimson was arguably the most consistently creative band in the genre. On IN THE COURT they blend wispy, Donovan-ish folk-rock with Wagnerian grandeur, mind-bending heavy rock, and even a free- jazz sensibility. Greg Lake's vocals are effectively theatrical but more restrained than in his later ELP work. Robert Fripp was just learning how to make mincemeat of a chord progression, but he's alternately lyrical and frenetic as the moment requires.
The extended jams on cuts like "Moonchild" are light-footed and inventive, never ponderous, thanks ...
| | Rod Stewart Never A Dull Moment (Gold) CD (1972) Gold
Pressed CD music
$19.10 NEVER A DULL MOMENT picks up where EVERY PICTURE TELLS A STORY left off. Here we have more raucous rock & roll with healthy dollops of soul and twang thrown in for good measure. Always looking for a good songwriter to cover, Stewart's honorees here include Jimi Hendrix ("Angel"), Dylan ("Mama You Been On My Mind"), and Rod's personal hero, Sam Cooke ("Twistin' The Night Away"). ...
| | Jay-Z Chapter One: Greatest Hits CD (2002) Bonus Track; Japan
Pressed music CDs
$38.19 A greatest-hits compilation was inevitable, but possibly too soon. Taking things up to right before 1999's Life and Times of S. Carter, this compiles all of the earliest Jay-Z anthems onto one disc, quite possibly to ride off of the success of the Blueprint and Unplugged releases. These tracks are infectious and wildly pop-savvy hip-hop masterpieces that laid the groundwork for the R&B/hip-hop charts for the past decade, and they show Jay-Z in some of the finest moments of his career. It's a smart idea, but the album could have been much stronger had more recent material been included in place of remixes as bonus tracks. That said, fans unfamiliar with his classic early work should start here. Die-hard loyalists most likely have everything noteworthy already. ~ Rob Theakston
