| | Sound Travels CD Mock, Julian CDS
Born into a family of musicians, Julian Mock has made music pretty much all his life. His formal study of classic guitar began at the ripe age of two and a half, and by the age of five he was performing with his brother, sister, and parents in a classic guitar quintet. Using their west Texas home-base as a jumping-off point, the Mock Family Guitarists toured the eastern United States and Europe, as well as Colombia and Mexico, gigging and busking to enthusiastic audiences in churches, concert halls, circuses, schools, and on street corners.Julian supplemented his musical training with cornet as a teen, then began concentrating on electric guitar. His classical background served him well as he moved into rock and jazz. He became fascinated by the intricacies, subtleties, and interrelationships of all manner of sound and and music, and much of his subsequent work is based on a refined mingling of styles and techniques.Julian has played in a wide range of ensembles, from heavy rock and free form fusion, to backing folk singers. In 2002 Julian composed, produced, and recorded a 16-song CD entitled "Sound Travels". Each composition was designed to focus on and develop a specific technique, without sounding like an exercise. On this album you will hear solo acoustic guitar being strummed, hammered, picked, pulled, muted, fingered, tapped, and stroked to produce intricate, unique, and delightful melodies. In addition to working on a variety of sound art and video collage projects, Julian is preparing to release his second album of compositions for solo acoustic guitar. Sound Travels
$16.19 The subtitle of this album reveals the whole plot: "An Eclectic Collection of New Music Compositions." The material included on Odd Jobs, Assorted Climaxes was composed and recorded between 1995 and 2001. It features a number of performers and settings, from solo pieces for guitarist Ron Samworth to works for Amsterdam's Combustion Chamber, the CBC Radio Orchestra, and the Hard Rubber Orchestra, the latter being John Korsrud's longstanding creature. An HRO album this is not, but fans of the avant-garde brass band will view this as familiar territory. The main novelty here is the presence of strings, which open up the composer's sound palette. Nonetheless, Korsrud is first and foremost a maximalist composer. He just loves to mass musicians, give them a part that will drain all their energy, and see what happens. There are a few quieter pieces here, namely the opener, "Girl on the Grass," a duet between Samworth and Korsrud (on trumpet) written for a TV documentary, but most of the music features at least six musicians. "Glurp" is written for (and performed by) the 14 musicians of Combustion Chamber. An interesting blend of classical clichés and avant big-band tendencies, it provides a challenging yet quite entertaining listen. But the true highlights are found elsewhere, as in "VAP DIST," a work in three movements for orchestra, in which Korsrud applies his maximalist views to the string section with striking results. The fourth movement of "String Theory" (the only one included here) is an orgiastic ten-minute piece that has all the drive of a typical Hard Rubber Orchestra number, except that it is performed by only five musicians, with samples by Paul Dolden; it swings, rocks, and sweats. The album concludes with the Hard Rubber Orchestra performing "You Look Like an Angel" with special guest vocalist Joe Keithley, aka Joey Shithead from the Vancouver punk band D.O.A. ...

| | Paul King Mckneely Karoo: Expedition To The Permian Of South Africa CD (2007)
Sound Travels
$18.19 There is no greater story to be told than that of life on Earth during eons past. Most science fiction borders on fantasy. But it has been said that "fact is stranger than fiction”. Professional scientists as well as science amateurs long to experience for themselves the wonders and grandeur of nature. Most modern science fiction is literally only “skin deep”. But fossils give us a mere hint of the deepness and richness of living communities that once graced our planet. It was this deep richness of past reality that inspired Paul King McKneely to begin writing a screenplay about a futuristic team of scientists who travel into deep time to witness living, breathing “in full color” life from these long lost ages. This album contains theme music that was written for the screenplay by the same name. It is one hour of synthetic orchestral music that celebrates the wonderful life that preceded us. These tracks contain sound that has been described as “atmospheric” with melodies that play on every emotion. The cinematic flavor expressed in these compositions celebrates the grandness of nature on Earth. Travel to the past with our team of scientists and experience the adventure for yourself. The Karoo is a vast arid inhospitable wilderness occupying the interior of the Republic of South Africa. Its weather can be very harsh and unpredictable. The Karoo contains some of the best sedimentary deposits in the world dating from the late Permian to the Triassic; a time before the dinosaurs. These strata have yielded an amazing glimpse into life that flourished over a quarter of a billion years ago. Long before the mammals had their heyday, their ancient reptilian ancestors were the dominant life forms on the Earth. And strange they were indeed. A century and a half ago the south-eastern corner of this region was center-stage in a collision between European and African powers. The British and the colonial Dutch (the “Africaners” ...
