Meet the future of Nu Soul. It is vocalist/songwriter/producer Patricia Maertens mix of the raw emotion of India Arie, the sophisticated grooves of Jill Scott and the experimental funk of Nelly Furtado. It's powerful, feisty and goes beyond your parent's soul records. Inspired by her unique upbringing, Patricia ventured toward a new direction in Soul. Born in Hollywood and raised in the inner city of Inglewood, she spent her first years listening to her 1580 KDAY heroes Rufus, Rose Royce and Rick James. Weekends meant listening to conga rhythms floating out of Centinela Park. But her teenage years, spent in the sleepy beach town of Palos Verdes, left her searching for new music. She found it in the abstract words of 70's punk poetess Patti Smith, in the voice of Bessie Smith with her poignant sadness and in the timeless funk of Stevie. Spending summers in the rainforests of El Salvador (home of her mother) and a few cold winters in her father's homeland of Germany also filled her ears with international sounds adding to Patricia's growing musical palette. Seeing life and the world from very different places has given Patricia a point of view few others share. Her original words, funky rhythms and raw soulful voice are creating quite the buzz in the Los Angeles urban underground music scene. Patricia live cannot be missed! She has played at the Temple Bar, The Mint, Genghis Cohen and other great LA Venues. Her songs have been heard on T.V. shows "The Shield" "Knock First" and others. She began her musical training studying under the tutelage of legendary film composers and Jazz musicians at the prestigious Dick Grove School of Music (sadly, now defunct) and graduated from both the vocal and composition programs. Upon completion, Patricia was awarded a full scholarship to attend Musicians Institute.Patricia produced her first 3 song CD with film composer Shawn Patterson whose credits include scoring for the hit animation series "Ren & Stimpy". On her newest CD-Numero Dos- she enlisted the help of Musicians and Producers who have worked with Macy Gray, Rosy, Kim Hill, Medusa and Feline Science and Ozomatli. However, Patricia remains her own woman. She wrote the music and lyrics to the songs as well as acting as president of her indie label Lothario Records. "This is music without compromise," says Patricia. Welcome to the future of Nu Soul. Numero DOS songs
$9.59 Hilary York's debut album, The Moon, was released January 2006. It draws on her years playing locally in Austin, as well as her travels. Somewhat of a retrospective, it is paced by stunning narratives. The album is unflaggingly luminous with candor and eloquence and is ear candy at its most bittersweet. Hilary was born in Houston, Texas, but moved to Bolivia with her family at a young age. There, she wrote her first poem. Her family moved to Australia, and later Germany, where she began writing and playing piano. She often sang for her family when visiting Houston. After high school in Virginia, Austin gave her a place to call home. It was while hitchhiking through Europe, however, that she wrote her first song with a friend. Hilary returned to Austin, finished an English degree, and studied guitar for her songwriting. She has been playing shows since 2000 in Austin, San Antonio, and Vigo, Spain, and was a SXSW showcasing artist ...

Numero DOS album
$20.29 Paul Riordan met Artist Ivan Rados through a mutual friend, Graham Williams, owner of Telstar Records. Paul was brought on board to initially create background music for Ivanâs performance art and exhibitions in the UK.As Paul said; âIvan gave me a couple of his treasured cassette tapes of traditional Yugoslavian folk music and chants. I was immediately struck by the beauty of the sounds. We created a system of musical loops, with a sound system that would never play the same loop twice.âThis was the genesis of the album project.During the course of Ivanâs exhibitions, where the initial Rados tracks were played, there was an overwhelming request for copies of the music. This inspired Paul to produce a complete album, with the services of percussionist and sound engineer Kent Davies and vocalist Eve Ellis- Rados âThe Transparent Manâ was made. It was an immediate success within the âambient danceâ and Dance/Trance remix worlds. âMy soul is at the end of the Universeâ (track 4) was included on many of the Euphoria dance compilations, both as ambient chill-out and full-on trance mix. The remixes quickly became favourites at the Whirly Gigâs famous end of the night âParachute setâ.Paul Riordan started his musical career playing bass guitar in the now cult 60's psychedelic band 'Mandrake Paddle Steamer' with EMI. After Mandrake, Paul worked as a session musician for Pye records and EG management - touring as a support act with major bands and artists: Kings Crimson, Roxy Music, Randy Newman and many others. In the 80âs he worked for the Britannia Row Organization (Pink Floydâs Studio) learning his craft in the studio and touring with the Pink Floyd as Guitar Tec on the Wall tour. Paul started his own studio in the early 90's and gradually became involved in recording and composing music for television, and music production. In the early days he worked with Rick Smith of Underworld, it was Rick who introduced Paul to dance music. Paul achieved UK chart success under the alias of 'Bravado' with the International hit single 'Harmonica ...
