This album is titled "30 Years of Ragtime" and features seventeen of my own Ragtime compositions dating from the present back to the mid-70s. There are some that have never been played publicly and others that have been both recorded and published. This collection includes prize winners from the Scott Joplin International Ragtime Festival Rag Composition Contest, one Honorable Mention (1997) and two first-prize winners (1975 and 1999). There is even one recorded by a Dixieland band. Hardcore Neil Young fans might want to take the title of this instrumental jazz-rock "tribute" to heart and run. But if they do, they will be missing one of the most innovative, creative, and daring reworkings of Young's, or anyone else's, catalog. The Toronto-based quartet that features guitarist Kevin Breit, best known for his more commercially oriented work with Norah Jones, deconstructs nine Neil Young hits, rebuilding them in ways that make the originals all but unrecognizable. The bandmembers grab bits of melodies, twist them into inventive formations, and seldom let Young's arrangements influence the new versions. Hence, those looking for simplistic, easy-to-swallow covers will likely be disappointed. Versatility has never been a problem or a pose for singer Julie Christensen, whose voice has found a home in the L.A. post-punk band Divine Horsemen and, for years, as a spotlighted singer with Leonard Cohen. With Something Familiar, Christensen’s third solo album, she adds another genre feather to the cap: jazz.
