This Los Angeles-based band features a Cambodian vocalist (she sings in both English and Khmer) and takes as its primary inspiration the Cambodian rock of the 1960s. As there isn't exactly an overload of bands playing retro-psychedelic Cambodian rock in America in the 2000s, Dengue Fever stands out, and especially so with their beautifully realized second album, VENUS ON EARTH.
Dengue Fever's music is a heady cocktail of reverb-laden guitar, Farfisa organ, horns, and shuffling rhythms that channels jazz, lounge music, Southeast Asian pop, and spy movie music. "Woman in Her Shoes" sounds like a cross between Nico and the Zombies, and "Seeing Hands" recalls a mix of the Velvet Underground and a Bollywood tune, while "Monsoon of Perfume" is as effortlessly entrancing as Roy Orbison. In short, it's hard to classify VENUS ON EARTH, which is exactly what makes it refreshing.

Tinariwen strip rock down to its basic building blocks of rhythm, guitars, and voice. On their second CD there are no fancy studio tricks or multiple overdubs. They stick to what they've shown they do well -- keep the music raw and emotional. While there are similarities to the desert blues of Mali, these Tuareg nomads from the Western Sahara are as much as rock band as the Stones at their best, capable of conjuring up magic with a guitar riff or lick. Oftentimes, the music has the same bluesy, undulating, hypnotic rhythm of a camel crossing the sand, as on "Aldhechen Manin." But they can also crank the amps and unleash something to tingle the spine and feet, which they do on "Oualahila Ar Tesninam," as frantic and primal a piece of rock & roll as you're likely to find. There's even a touch of rap on "Arawan." But there's a complexity in their basic approach, the interlocking layers of electric guitars and the plaintive, defiant voices. This release features a live performance by CRACKER in Cleveland.
Despite its title, this disc was recorded in Chicago in November of 1999, and was originally available as a limited-edition bonus disc accompanying Cracker's 2002 Forever album. Reissued as its own entity, and including four music videos of Forever tracks like "Guarded by Monkeys" and "Shine" among others, the disc captures the band in top form on their radio anthems "Teen Angst" and "Low." While the latter highlights the fluid guitar riffing of Johnny Hickman, frontman David Lowery shines on the emotive ballad "The Big Dipper" -- culled from 1996's The Golden Age. If the crowd-pleasing cover of Status Quo's "Pictures of Matchstick Men," (popularized by Lowery's other band, Camper Van Beethoven), seems like an ill fit here, Hello, Cleveland! The American version of Reality Effect included three songs previously released only in the U.K. -- the British singles "Blind Among the Flowers" and "The Loneliest Man in the World" and the album track "Fool's Paradise" -- as well as songs released on the U.K. version of the album, which had been released the previous fall. The new songs found the group rocking harder for the most part and incorporating such influences as Jefferson Airplane, with lead singers Annie Lennox and Peet Coombes playing the parts of Grace Slick and Marty Balin. But the standout track was Lennox's reading of Dusty Springfield's 1964 hit "I Only Want to Be with You," which made the U.S. singles chart after being a British Top Ten hit.
