It takes a perusal through the booklet to realize this isn't a long-lost Look album that has been gathering dust on some shelf for the preceding two decades. No, instead the set is comprised of nine new -- or at least "newish" -- songs; some date back to 1999, and "I Am the Beat" is appended as a bonus track. "I Am the Beat," of course, was the single that established the band's reputation, a number six U.K. smash back in 1980. The follow-up failed to follow in "I Am the Beat"'s soaring footsteps, and the group subsequently moved from MCA to the small Towerbell indie. When that label closed shop in 1983, the Look folded as well. But the intervening years seem to have barely touched the band, which continues to punch out perfect little pop/rock nuggets. The production glosses up the sound, while better instruments and improved musicianship add a further shine. The jubilant "Kicking Up Dust" and exhilarating "I Won't Commit Myself" are club-rock spectaculars, the latter in Stax style, the former in fabulous disco fashion. Belgian pop rockers The Names carved a niche in the 1980s with their sole album SWIMMING, augmented here by singles and B-sides.
The Names' Swimming isn't the sharpest arrow in infamous producer Martin Hannett's quiver, and the Belgian group indeed wallowed in the obscurity that journalist Jon Savage claimed they didn't deserve, but the record still fares rather well as a second-tier post-punk record. Starting off with a relatively upbeat first side and eventually drifting into a not exactly inventive morass of lumpen tempos and a rather off-putting level of mopey meandering (a sequencing scheme conceived by the producer), it certainly isn't the most listener-friendly record of its era.
