John Barry's fifth Oscar-winning score is a profoundly moving body of music, generally (though not entirely) elegiac in tone, very much like the movie for which it was written. It's also a bit of a mixed bag, occasionally falling back on material that will be familiar to fans of the James Bond movies that Barry scored during the early/mid-'60s. The main title theme uses some of those devices -- dense, heavy string passages adjacent to trumpet calls -- but it is hardly representative of the full score. The real heart of Dances With Wolves is the pensive, tragic "John Dunbar Theme," which is far closer in spirit to Barry's music for Somewhere in Time or They Might Be Giants, films (and scores) ...
| | Li'L Abner CD (2002) Original Broadway Cast; Bonus Tracks
Brilliant Moon Soundtrack CD music
$8.99 Music composed by Gene De Paul. Lyrics written by Johnny Mercer.
Songwriter Johnny Mercer did not have much luck writing for Broadway, but the exception was Lil' Abner, based on the satiric Al Capp comic strip about the rural residents of Dogpatch. Mercer wrote the song lyrics to music by Gene DePaul, with whom he had worked on the movie musical Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. After the show opened on November 15, 1956, it became the only stage work with which Mercer was associated to turn a profit, running 693 performances. Actually, the score isn't as strong as that for one of Mercer's flops, St. Louis Woman, but it is appropriate to the subject matter. The songs "Jubilation T. Cornpone," "The Country's in the Very Best ...

| | Baha Men Greatest Movie Hits CD (2002)
Brilliant Moon Soundtrack songs
$11.99 The Baha Men may be one-hit wonders -- their one hit being, of course, the novelty record "Who Let the Dogs Out" -- but that song, which was featured in Rugrats in Paris and, later, Men in Black II, certainly generated plenty of more movie and television work for them. This album is full of songs with a similarly festive feel recorded for a series of comedies (Miss Congeniality, Rat Race) and children's films (Scooby Doo, The Little Vampire, My Father the Hero, Shrek, Big Fat Liar), as well as kids' TV shows (Malcolm in the Middle, Stanley). Nothing has the bizarre appeal of "Who Let the Dogs Out," but the Caribbean music is unfailingly pleasant, with frequent references to other familiar pop songs (e.g., "You All Dat" from Malcolm in the Middle borrows heavily from "The Lion Sleeps Tonight," and "Crocodile Rock" from the movie Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course is the Elton John hit with altered lyrics). This album will be enjoyed ...
