Closed Captioned; Soundtrack English; Academy Awards; English Subtitles; Amaray Case An imaginative hybrid of action, kung fu, and science fiction, THE MATRIX is a hyperkinetic, mind-bending, and visionary spectacle. Keanu Reeves stars as Neo, a disaffected computer hacker seeking the answer to the question, "What is the Matrix?" His search leads him to the elusive Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne), who begins to enlighten Neo about the illusions of his so-called reality. In accepting the answer Morpheus provides, Neo is hurled into a futuristic world where old realities are shattered, and he must fight for his life, and the future of humanity, against a dangerous group of inhuman government agents. With THE MATRIX, the Wachowskis have established themselves as innovative filmmakers who push the boundaries of live-action films. Like the groundbreaking STAR WARS, THE MATRIX (also the first film of a trilogy) showcases a unique visual style, one the Wachowskis achieved through an array of techniques and digital effects, some never before seen in mainstream Hollywood films. Although computer morphing technology had been used before in films such as THE ABYSS and TERMINATOR 2, the Wachowskis were the first to use "bullet time," a time-bending digital effect that utilizes both computer-generated imagery and still photography.
The film itself is a complex story that aspires to mythology, focusing on a computer hacker named Neo (Keanu Reeves) who searches for the truth behind the mysterious force known as the Matrix. He finds his answer with a group of strangers led by the charismatic Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne). What they encounter in confronting that truth makes for a lightning-paced, eye-popping thrill ride of a movie. Packed with stunning fight scenes (choreographed by accomplished Hong Kong director Yuen Wo-Ping), astonishing visual effects, quotable lines, and a terrific supporting cast (led by Carrie-Anne Moss, in her first major Hollywood film), THE MATRIX is a bold triumph that raises the bar for all science fiction films. Theatrical release date: April 2, 1999.
THE MATRIX won three Academy Awards: Achievement in Film Editing, Sound, and Visual Effects (beating out STAR WARS EPISODE 1: THE PHANTOM MENACE). In each category, the winners quoted a line from the film.
The Wachowski brothers got their start at Marvel Comics, where they wrote dialogue for Clive Barker's HELLRAISER.
The official website, www.whatisthematrix.com, features a revolving showcase of comic book writers.
The actors initially thought combat training would take a few weeks. They eventually trained for more than five months (October 1997-March 1998), primarily because the actors and the Wachowskis wanted to limit the use of stunt doubles in the picture; the directors wanted the audience to see that the actual actors were performing the stunts.
Each actor had their own kung fu master on the set.
Neo is an anagram for "One."
The Wachowskis named Neo's alter ego Thomas, for the biblical Doubting Thomas.
SIMULACRA AND SIMULATION, Jean Baudrillard's theoretical text concerning culture, reality, and simulation, is the title of the book Neo uses to keep his contraband.
Carrie-Anne Moss sprained her ankle during the filming of the federal lobby scene but told no one at the time, even though she was unable to walk the next day.
Moss appeared in the 1993 television show MATRIX, about a hit man working for the underworld.
A musical theater piece by the Live Bait Theater group in Chicago (the Wachowski brothers' hometown) called NEO: A MATRIX MUSICAL ran in May 2000.
Producer Joel Silver called THE MATRIX "the first film of the new millennium."
Talking about the making of the film, Fishburne compared the brothers Wachowski to the Brothers Grimm in their ability to tell fairy tales.
Weapons expert Rock Galotti taught the cast how to realistically hold and shoot all the weapons in the film. Matrix Quotes/Excerpts: "What is the Matrix?"--Neo (Keanu Reeves) to Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss)

$8.05 Neo (Keanu Reeves), Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss), and Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) continue their battle against the machines in THE MATRIX RELOADED, the second chapter of Larry and Andy Wachowski's MATRIX trilogy. As RELOADED begins, Neo, Trinity, and Morpheus arrive in Zion with new crew member Link (Harold Perrineau), and discover that 250,000 dreaded sentinels are close to launching a massive attack on the underground haven for the liberated minds of humanity. When Neo seeks advice from the prophetic Oracle (the late Gloria Foster), their meeting leads to a sorely outnumbered fight with Neo's old nemesis, Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving). While the sentinels advance on Zion, various battles within the Matrix continue to escalate, culminating in an extended highway chase sequence involving Morpheus, Trinity, more imposing agents, and two new adversaries--the relentless white-clad Twins (Adrian and Neil Rayment).
With RELOADED, the Wachowski brothers delve deeper into both the realm of the Matrix and the apocalyptic, machine-controlled future reality. Initially giving ample attention to both the romance between Neo and Trinity and to the vast underground city of Zion, the film eventually delivers one stunning set piece after another, with the amazing martial arts sequences and jaw-dropping effects of the first MATRIX elevated to even more astounding heights. In addition to the returning cast of Reeves, Moss, Fishburne, Weaving, and Foster, Perrineau and Jada Pinkett Smith make for welcome new additions, and Monica Bellucci offers up an unforgettably sensual appearance. Larger than the original scale on every level, THE MATRIX RELOADED is a thoroughly entertaining sequel that will leave viewers eager for the trilogy's conclusion, THE MATRIX REVOLUTIONS.
In the second chapter of the Matrix trilogy, Neo (Keanu Reeves), Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) and Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) continue to lead the revolt against the Machine Army. In their quest to save the human race

Matrix review
$10.09 The final movie in Larry and Andy Wachowski's MATRIX trilogy is THE MATRIX REVOLUTIONS. Toning down the romantic and philosophic elements of the second film in the series, THE MATRIX RELOADED, this third installment focuses on action. Neo (Keanu Reeves) is trapped in limbo between reality and the Matrix, while Zion, the last human city, is attacked by hordes of machines. Meanwhile, Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne), Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss), and Seraph (Collin Chou) confront the ruthless Merovingian (Lambert Wilson) to secure Neo's release. As the fight for Zion grows more dire, Neo and Trinity embark on a perilous journey into the heart of the machine city, while Morpheus and Niobe (Jada Pinkett Smith) rush to Zion's aid. Eventually, Neo must face the increasingly powerful Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving) in a last battle for the fate of humanity. Highlights of the film include Niobe's thrilling spaceship piloting, the armored battle for Zion, and Neo's inevitable brawl with Smith, all of which feature amazing special effects. In the midst of the adventure, there are a few quieter moments--such as Neo's Beckett-like wait for the train back to reality--that intriguingly punctuate the proceedings. A fast-paced ending to an epic trilogy, REVOLUTIONS proves once again why the MATRIX series is revered by its dedicated fans.

| | Ice-T Gangsta Rap CD (2006)
Matrix DVD
$14.45 Calling an album GANGSTA RAP might seem like an absurd platitude coming from any rapper other than Ice-T, the undisputed originator of the genre. Ice takes time off from his acting gig on LAW & ORDER: SVU to douse listeners with a potent shot of classic ghetto storytelling and explicit recaps of O.G. sexcapades. With a host of guests (including wife Coco) and a solid boom-bap production style dusted with the requisite g-funk flourishes, Ice-T takes the nearly-self-parodying thug posturing so prevalent in 21st century hip-hop, and reminds listeners who invented the pose and why it was so deadly in the first place.

Love is the title of the highly successful Cirque du Soleil show featuring the music of the Beatles, currently wowing audiences in Las Vegas. The music for the show, reworked by Sir George Martin and his son Giles, is a continuous soundscape of well-known songs by the Beatles augmented by additional instrumentation and vocals taken from their vast bank of original multi-track tapes. The result is an amazing set reinforcing the timeless quality of the group's recordings destined to open up a new legion of fans to the Beatles experience. The CD includes newly mixed and mastered music plus a 28 page booklet. The audio DVD contains 82 minutes of music both in 5.1 surround sound and
Given his unparalleled talent for innovative recording, mixing, and soundscaping, producer Sir George Martin has always been rightly referred to as "the fifth Beatle." Some 35 years after the Beatles disbanded, Martin was still shaping the group's music, as demonstrated by the 2006 release LOVE. The album (created to coincide with a Cirque du Soleil performance based on Beatles songs) amounts to a musical fantasia centered on the Beatles' output, with famous work from both early and late in the band's career collaged with great care and artistry.

$11.89 While many movies use actors to play musicians, the Irish indie film ONCE enlisted singer-songwriters Glen Hansard (of the Frames) and Marketa Irglova to portray two Dubliners on the edge of romance. The couple's real-life chemistry not only translated to a compelling, crowd-pleasing tale, it yielded a subtly beautiful soundtrack, which consists largely of thoughtful chamber-pop tunes by Hansard, some of which previously appeared (in slightly altered form) on the Frames' THE COST and his prior collaboration with Irglova, THE SWELL SEASON. Highlights of the collection include the gentle "Falling Slowly" and the urgent "When Your Mind's Made Up," tracks that elegantly echo the emotional ups and downs of the lauded film.
Out-of-print in the US. CD/DVD version. DVD includes, 'making of & Live Performances', The Real Life End: Story of the making 'Once', Falling Slowly (live at the Old Town School of Folk-video), Lies (live at KCRW-video), When Your Mind's Made Up (live at KCRW-video) and If You Want Me (live at KCRW-video). Once is a modern day musical set on the streets of Dublin. Featuring Glen Hansard, lead singer of the Irish band The Frames, the film tells the story of a street musician and a Czech immigrant during an eventful week as they write, rehearse and record songs that reveal their unique love story. Once was the winner of the World Cinema Audience Award at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival. Written and directed by John Carney, Once stars Glen Hansard and Mark‚ta Irglov . Hansard and Irglov previously collaborated on Glen's 2006 solo album, The Swell Season. Over the summer of 2007, the Irish musical Once and its accom-panying soundtrack have become a word-of-mouth phenomenon unlike anything that has come before it. Filmed in Dublin for $150,000 the little movie that could earned the Audience Award at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival and grossed over $8.5 million at the box office while earning unanimous critical acclaim.

| | Pretear - Vol. 2 DVD (2004)
Matrix film
$20.89 Created by acclaimed animators Kaori Naruse and Junichi Sato (SAILOR MOON, KALEIDO STAR), the magical-girl anime series PRETEAR borrows from CINDERELLA and SNOW WHITE for an utterly unique sci-fi fairy tale. The series centers around 16-year-old Himeno, who is perfectly happy-go-lucky until her widowed father remarries and moves them to his new wife's palatial island estate. With a stern stepmother and two new stepsisters who either taunt or ignore her, Himeno thinks that things can't get any worse until she is visited by seven mysterious men called the Leafe Knights. Led by the handsome but disdainful Hayate, the knights inform Himeno that she is a magical being with the power to help them battle the evil Princess of Disaster, who is spreading demon larvae in an effort to suck the world's lifeblood and destroy it. Eschewing the genre's typical cutesiness for truly innovative storytelling bolstered by gorgeous animation and exciting action sequences, PRETEAR is the rare magical-girl anime that appeals to both male and female viewers. This collection continues the series with three more episodes.
Himeno Awayuki should be happy. Her family is rich. And when Himeno merges with a Leafe Knight, she transforms into an all-powerful superhero: the Pretear! But a discarded lipstick leads Himeno to learn that her archenemy Fenril, Princess of Disaster, was once the human Takako and the previous Pretear. Worse, Hayate-Himeno's current love interest-spurned Takako and turned her to evil! Devastated, Himeno loses her Pretear abilities.
