Released without the usual flurry of hype, Before I Self Destruct fulfills 50 Cent's contractual obligation to the Interscope label. It also doubles as a throwback album, returning the rapper to the hunger and hatred of his early mixtapes while skillfully recasting him as a wannabe upstart. That is, for the most part. The four radio-friendly bedroom numbers that conclude the album are out of place but fairly good to dime-piece beautiful, with the best being the Ne-Yo showcase "Baby by Me" ("Have a baby by me, baby/Be a millionaire"). As pleasing as these final numbers are, if you leave the room after the macho bruiser "I Got Swag" ("I'm infinitely special/Girl the Lord is gonna bless you/If you do what I tell you to do"), you'll return to a confusingly different album, one that's as glamorous but less vital. Rhino in the U.K. issued this so-called Platinum Collection. It is a single disc of 13 tracks from Grover Washington, Jr.'s period with Elektra, beginning with 1980's Come Morning and running through 1984's Inside Moves, when he jumped ship for Columbia. There were certainly hit records during the period, "Winelight" being the biggest, and Washington's singles charted, but his albums had become lackluster and the compilers of this knew it, which is why there are cross-licensed tunes from other labels such as the smash duet with Bill Withers on the Ralph McDonald-penned "Just the Two of Us." The reclusive and enigmatic Fred Neil really didn't care one hoot about the machinations of the music business, and while it is tempting to compare him to someone like Nick Drake, whose bouts with depression kept him away from the limelight, it would appear Neil suffered instead from a severe case of personal and creative sanity, an ailment extremely rare in the industry. His recorded output really only spanned eight years, from 1963 to 1971, the period covered by this fine single-disc anthology from Raven Records, and although he did occasional live shows thereafter, for all practical purposes Neil dropped off the face of the earth after the release of the piecemeal Other Side of This Life album in 1971. While it is difficult to look at Neil's self-abbreviated recording legacy and not have a strong sense that things are incomplete, the quality of his output, particularly as a songwriter, is extremely high. He wrote "Candy Man," a B-side hit in 1961 for Roy Orbison, and "Everybody's Talkin'," a huge success in 1969 for Harry Nilsson, and penned such gorgeous songs as "The Dolphins," "Little Bit of Rain," and the brutally straight-eyed and honest "Other Side of This Life."
