(1 Customer Review)
A long-time member of the Grammy-winning jazz group the Yellowjackets, saxophonist Bob Mintzer is also the head of a lesser-known, but just as hot, New York-based big band. This 1983 album--the title is a nod to Mintzer's nickname--was their debut release and until 2007 was not available on CD in the U.S.

Papa Lips songs
$14.99 Drummer Joe Farnsworth has been the drummer of choice for many New York recording sessions over a dozen-year stretch prior to this CD, which is his recording debut as a leader. Having studied with two great drummers, the late Art Taylor and the late Alan Dawson, Farnsworth keeps things moving as he works with a variety of quartets and quintets, with bassist Ron Carter joining him throughout the session. Pianist Harold Mabern contributed the hard bop opener, "Sweet Poppa," which also features tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander, a frequent collaborator on recording dates with Farnsworth. Veteran trombonist Curtis Fuller, with David Hazeltine taking over the piano, is added for the loping standard "Old Folks." Trumpeter Jim Rotundi is on a trio of tracks, including the leader's one original of the date, the funky "Prime Time" (seemingly a throwback to the era of 1960s soul-jazz), as well as the brisk hard bop sextet arrangement of "Hello, Young Lovers," ...

| | Amon Duul II Phallus Dei CD (1969) Bonus Tracks
Papa Lips album
$14.79 The post-psychedelic German phenomenon known as Krautrock pretty much starts here. The 1969 release PHALLUS DEI was the first album by Amon Duul II, who had split off from the more shambling, hippie-type communal outfit Amon Duul. The former had a darker, edgier spirit, and a greater sense of direction. That's not to say everything on PHALLUS DEI is tied up in a neat little package; it's a raw, bursting-at-the-seams sonic attack fully capable of melting ears at a thousand paces.
Like their Krautrock contemporaries, Amon Duul II were influenced by the psychedelic sounds of artists like Jimi Hendrix and Jefferson Airplane, but they transmuted that inspiration into something even more exploratory, open-ended, and primal. Bashing at guitars and drums like men possessed, they create a brain-frying firestorm of sound, cementing both their status as found fathers of Krautrock, and PHALLUS DEI's reputation as one of its definitive musical statements.
Digitally remastered edtion of the incredible debut by these Krautrock pioneers. This was one of only two albums to feature British-born bassist Dave Anderson (who would leave this band in order to join Hawkwind. This album was the result of ...
| | Thad Jones Live At The Village Vanguard CD (1967) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Papa Lips CD music
$9.79 The second recording by the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra is the equal of the first. Most memorable here are "Little Pixie," Fats Waller's "Willow Tree," and particularly, the spirited "Don't Git Sassy." With arrangements by Thad Jones, Bob Brookmeyer and Garnett Brown, and an all-star cast that includes trumpeters Snooky Young, Marvin Stamm and Richard Gene Williams, valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, the reeds of Jerome Richardson, Jerry Dodgion, Joe Farrell, Eddie Daniels and Pepper Adams (all of whom solo), pianist Roland Hanna and bassist Richard Davis, among others, this was one of the great big bands. Fortunately, the exciting music on this out of print LP has been reissued on CD as ...
