| | Thelonious Monk Transformer CD Thelonious Monk Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
This double-CD set of archival material documents Thelonious Monk's complete process of transforming the American Popular Song "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You" into a version that bears his individualistic and distinctive stamp. The first CD consists of home based solo piano practice and refining sessions from 1957, as you hear Monk actually learning or playing with the melody and chord changes, then with each of the five takes, gradually redefining the song, adding his own touches, and embellishing on them. As he continues to play, he's attempting ever wider variations, inserting arpeggiated figures, his trademark off minor flourishes, stride accents, and at the end, offers a near 30 minute long version of ever expanding and personalized substitutions while still holding true to the basic form of the piece in moderate tempo throughout. The second CD has Monk sounding more patient and, if possible, deliberate but always witty for the final practice take. Then you hear a serving of three live performances with his quartet from various concerts from Paris or Stockholm done in 1963, 1964, and 1961, respectively, featuring the ever present tenor saxophonist Charlie Rouse. These shows are much more lively than the private tapes. It is the final selection, from Stockholm in 1961, where Monk and the band really nail the piece in a concise eight-minute version that leaves no doubt of his mastery and ability to make the tune truly his own. These recordings are made available for the first time by Monk's estate supervised by his son T.S., and though they'll probably only appeal to fans or completists, they offer something perhaps no other recording in the history of jazz can claim: a full view into the conception, birth, adoption, adaptation and growth into adulthood of a single composition. It is, at the very least, a very intriguing exercise, made more so by the brilliant maestro of modern music. ~ Michael G. Nastos

The Wire (p.62) - "[With] some of the most exciting Monk on record; as he slips in and out of double-time stride piano figurations and head-scratching rhythmic pratfalls, while his right hand finds ever more elevated paraphrases." Thelonious Monk Transformer Songs | | Transformer CD DISC 1: |

| | Frank Wess Quartet CD (1960)
Transformer
$8.75 Frank Wess has long been one of the most underrated flautists in jazz, but it's his primary instrument on this CD reissue of a Moodsville LP recorded in 1960. With fine accompaniment by piano master Tommy Flanagan, bassist Eddie Jones and drummer Bobby Donaldson, the leader's lyrical chops are evident in Alec Wilder's rarely performed ballad "It's ...
| | Terry Gibbs 52ND & Broadway: Songs Of The Bebop Era CD (2004)
Transformer
$14.59 Terry Gibbs has left an indelible mark on the jazz world since 1947. With more than 65 albums to his credit and as the creator of over 300 compositions, the vibist continues to impress his fans with the addition of 52nd & Broadway: Songs of the Bebop Era to his repertoire. Gibbs pays homage to the jazz artists and their timeless standards with the accompaniment of an excellent rhythm section, a string section, and guest soloists James Moody, Nicholas Payton, Sam Most, and Tom Ranier. The 12-track recording opens with Monk's "Round Midnight," which Gibbs treats as a bossa nova. With two superior solos and sublime call and response from Gibbs on vibes and Payton on trumpet, this song is both reflective and buoyant. On Lester Young's blues "Jumping With Symphony Sid," tenor saxophonist master James Moody and Gibbs compliment each other with their bouncing bebop elements ...

In the 1960s, trumpeter Miles Davis became a star outside of the jazz world, first with what history refers to as "the Quintet" with Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock, then with his highly influential post-BITCHES BREW electric bands. But there was a "transitional" period, after John Coltrane left Davis's employ and before the Shorter/Hancock era, which the SEVEN STEPS box set based around the SEVEN STEPS TO HEAVEN album documents in its entirety, ...

Transformer
$11.79 Digitally remastered by Gene Paul (DB Plus, New York, New York).
On the surface, this 1976 date for Atlantic might seem like an attempt to cash in on Allison's de facto anthem (the title track) by offering a rerecorded version of it along with new takes on some other old Allison tunes. The fact is that the superb musicianship provided by Al Cohn, David Sanborn, Joe Farrell, and others, does indeed take the tracks to new places. "Your Mind is ...

Transformer
$8.15 It may come as something as a surprise, initially, that Star Time International Presents Supercuts features absolutely no tracks from the label's small but perfectly formed roster, which includes Brendan Benson, the Walkmen, the Natural History, and Northern State. However, the same quality that defines the label's signed bands also applies to this compilation, which, although it was culled from the piles of demos sent to Star Time, plays like a very solid set of indie rock radio programming. Some of the better-known artists on Supercuts include the Mood Elevator, whose "Guilty" features Benson on drums and a muscular '60s pop aesthetic; the Realistics, whose "Why Didn't You Stay" mixes shimmery, ...
