| | Smooth Ones CD
Those seeking a rather groove-filled but otherwise generic compilation of modern-day smooth jazz from the Rendezvous Music label will find this one more than satisfactory. It features relatively new cuts from artists such as Kirk Whalum, Praful, Kyle Eastwood, Wayman Tisdale, Philippe Saisse, and Mindi Abair, among others. Particularly hip is the Philippe Saisse Trio's groovy, Ramsey Lewis-styled reading of Steely Dan's "Do It Again," Marc Antoine's flamenco-inflected hip-hop jazz on "Mediterraneo," and Rick Braun's "Notorious." The selection is sequenced beautifully with mid- and slow tempo groovers intermittently sprinkled among the harder-edged funky jams. This collection is proof positive that smooth jazz is not some unholy hybrid of easy listening and pop. It's hip; it's full of street swagger, the dancefloor's quirks and quarks, and the canny knowledge of pop; and it delves deep into both lyricism and beats. Smooth Ones album
$7.59 Guitarist Peter White follows up his 2001 release Glow with more solid melodic smooth jazz on Confidential. Once again there is an amiable mix of quiet storm-ready ballads, up-tempo Latin numbers, and groove-oriented soundscapes. Joining White are such instrumental pop luminaries as trumpeter Chris Botti, keyboardist Brian Culbertson, and percussionist Paulinho Da Costa. While there are no particular surprises here, fans of White's incomparable guitar playing should find much to enjoy on this laid-back disc. ~ Matt Collar

| | Steve Oliver 3-D CD (2004)
Smooth Ones CD music
$14.79 As one reviewer said of the cheerful music and personality of this increasingly popular voice of smooth jazz guitar, it's Disneyland all the time with him. In other words, Positive Energy, the name of his second genre disc, wasn't just a happy marketing tool. And the title of this disc is appropriate, too, because with the co-production help of founding Spyro Gyra keyboardist Tom Schuman, Oliver digs deep into a rich variety of influences for a multifaceted romp through the worlds of pop, jazz, urban/hip-hop, worldbeat, Brazilian, and Latin music. While focusing as always on his classic acoustic guitar and brilliant "vocalese" to convey the lead melodies on the instrumentals, he stretches into edgier blues territory with his lesser-heard electric on "In the Shade of Cool." Joining all-star guests like Fourplay drummer Harvey Mason (who adds his gentle rhythmic touch to the lush romantic atmospheres of the title track) and saxophonist ...

$11.49 From the first track, "Everytime," where the always-unpredictable rapper Dirt McGirt lets loose, Jon B. reveals a sound that is both harder and smoother. On his first three efforts, B.'s best moments were when he molded '70s funk into his own modern take on ...

Smooth Ones album
$8.49 W/L.Rimes/L.Richie/C.Khan/Ewf/ G.Knight/K.Loggins/B.Bacharach
AT LAST...THE DUETS ALBUM is something of a departure in terms of what one might expect from a Kenny G album. The mellow saxophonist came to fame as a purveyor of soothing instrumental jazz/pop, but AT LAST marks his collaboration with a bevy of superstar vocalists. The singers that join the man formerly known as Gorelick ...
| | Steve Oliver Radiant CD (2006)
Smooth Ones CD music
$14.25 This buoyant smooth jazz guitarist and vocalist was once described by Jazziz Magazine as having a personality that was genuinely "Disneyland all the time." Many genre greats balk at having their music called "happy jazz," but Oliver would no doubt take that as a compliment. His deepening production textures show that he can do more than simply create playful, upbeat, instantly hummable melodies, but he's always focused on making sure the listener has a great time. His second recording was called Positive Energy and the title of this disc sums up his ongoing vibe and mission even more succinctly. While his previous recordings included numerous ...
