While the Sugar Hill Gang's seminal track, "Rapper's Delight," has dated a bit since it was first released in 1979, it's important to remember its cataclysmic impact on music. It wasn't the first rap song and it wasn't the best, but when "Rapper's Delight" broke through to the airwaves, it put rap music on the map and started a revolution. This 2008 DBK Works reissue of the Sugar Hill Gang's self-titled debut LP places the song in its proper back-in-the-day context--with original artwork, track listing, and sleeve notes--and gives a classic old-school joint an exhilarating curtain call. So everybody now, "Hotel! Motel! Holiday Inn!"
Originally released in 1980, The Sugarhill Gang's debut album is one of first full length releases in hip-hop history and features the stone cold classic "Rapper's Delight" which was the first ever international rap hit, introducing the world to the soun

Sugarhill Gang album
$11.39 Throbbing Gristle's first album--the "second" refers to it coming out at the end of their second year together--must have sounded like it came from another planet upon its 1977 release. Later industrial bands arguably introduced too much "normal" musical content, but very little about SECOND ANNUAL REPORT could be called normal.
From its deadpan sleeve to the peculiar choice of structuring the album with three live versions of the horrific "Slug Bait" (including a wonderful clip of a DJ screaming at the audience after a Throbbing Gristle gig) and four of the more straightforward "Maggot Death," it's a startling document. This reissue also includes the lengthy improvisation "After Cease to Exist," and both sides of the brilliant and ...

| | Osibisa Black Magic Night CDs (1977)
Sugarhill Gang songs
$15.05 Recorded on July 19, 1977, this double LP (reissued as a two-CD set) contained live versions of songs that appeared on several of their 1971-1977 albums, as well as one ("Living Loving Feeling") that only came out as a single. Osibisa, who anticipated many of the features of the worldbeat sound, cover a lot of ground on this lengthy set -- maybe too much for some tastes. Sometimes the material gets close to traditional African music in its rhythms and chanting; at others, it nearly treads on jazz fusion territory, though not in a bad way. And while Osibisa singer and multi-instrumentalist Teddy Osei says in the liner notes that the band wasn't influenced by Santana, the Afro-Latin rhythms and chant-style vocals in some of the songs certainly remind you of Santana, though again not in an objectionable fashion. There's also some Rahsaan Roland Kirk-style flute playing, and a rendition of their substantial 1976 British hit "Sunshine Day" that finds them ...
