Widely accepted as a leading authority on Baroque music, Ton Koopman introduces and conducts five of J.S. Bachs religious cantatas (composed between 1707 and 1731) and his famous secular Kaffee Kantate. Performed by the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra and Choir, the ensemble aptly illustrates the enormous skill and diversity in J.S. Bachs music. Ton Koopman - Bach Cantatas Movie Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) Wonderful! I'm just submitting this review because the previous, very positive reviewer has probably clicked on the wrong 'star' and thus this wonderful gem is displayed with 3 stars only. I absolutely agree with him, this is one of the best classical DVD-s available, concerning the performers' musicality, the performance's authenticity and the brilliant scene selection and camera work. impeccable musicality, luscious camerawork I won't speak to the musicality of this set...which I think is wonderful, precise, and lovely...but to the care with which this set of 6 cantatas was photographed and produced.
Each cantata has slightly different location, with some "costume" changes (especially the semi-staged Coffee Cantata). Koopman does not just rip through one cantata after another. Each is set up just right.
The multi-camerawork is great, using boom/steadicam to have the camera float over ensemble, then maneuver around to the solo vocalist or instrumentalist. They go a few extra steps to make this DVD very special.
Koopman's spoken intros are fascinating, but it's easy to click through them once you listen to them. I often put this on one of my two computers for background and love to glance over at it. My mother, who has dementia, really relates to the music, as the photography makes it easy to see what instruments are featured. She conducts along! Submitted by carol.wright (Mtn. Ton Koopman - Bach Cantatas video
$23.39 Ingmar Bergman has stated that THE MAGIC FLUTE had long since been an inspiration to him by the time he directed this movie version of an actual staging of Mozart's opera. In Emanuel Schikaneder's libretto--performed here in Swedish instead of German--Prince Tamino (Josef Köstlinger) is sent by the mysterious and powerful Queen of the Night (Birgit Nordin) to rescue her daughter, Pamina (Irma Urrila), from the sorcerer Sarastro (Ulrik Cold), who has kidnapped the girl. Tamino is aided on his mission by the bird catcher Papageno (Håkan Hagegård), an endearing buffoon (and arguably the opera's most popular character) who wants nothing more than to find himself a loving wife. The director presents a shortened version of the story, enhanced with a Freudian plot element (of sorts), while also giving the piece a slight overhaul for a more modern, less politically questionable feel. Bergman shows the goings-on onstage, often zooming in for close-ups of the performers' interaction with one another, interspersed with shots of individual faces in the audience. The actors were ...
