| | John Mayer Battle Studies CD (2009)
From Bliss To Devastation songs
$11.18 It's no secret that John Mayer is a 21st Century Fox, wining and dining women all through tabloid headlines, so it's about time he delivered an album that traded upon his loverman persona -- and Battle Studies is that record in spades. Retaining more than a modicum of the slick, soul-blues undertones of Continuum, Mayer fashions a modern groove album, a record that maintains a smooth seductive vibe so thoroughly it spills into a one-man band cover of "Crossroads." Mayer remains somewhat of a disciple of Slowhand, but he shows an unusual interest in the big AOR stylings of Journeyman, along with Stevie Ray Vaughan's In Step, creating a coolly clean blend of synths and Strats, one that's as much about texture as it is about song.something perfectly appropriate for a make-out album like this. Sometimes, Mayer dips too heavily toward the texture, but he can't resist a good, tight melody and builds the bulk of Battle Studies upon them: the elegant "Half of My Heart," the softly soulful "Perfectly Lonely." Here, Mayer is effortlessly ...
| | Tom Petty Live Anthology CDs (2009)
From Bliss To Devastation album
$19.34 It's a commonly held opinion among fans and band alike that Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers' lone live album, 1986's Pack Up the Plantation, didn't quite capture the group at its peak, so there has been a long-standing need for another live set, which 2009's Live Anthology finally provides. Like its closest cousin, Bruce Springsteen's Live 1975-1985, Live Anthology almost overcompensates for the long wait by offering almost too much music, cherrypicking highlights from 1978 to 2007. In its simplest incarnation, Live Anthology is a super-affordable, four-disc box set running 48 tracks, which is eight cuts longer than Springsteen's box, plenty long enough for most fans, but in its deluxe version, available only through Best Buy, there's an additional CD, plus two previously unreleased DVDs -- a 1978 New Years Eve concert from Santa Monica, a documentary called 400 Days shot during the Wildflowers tour -- a Blu-Ray edition ...

This St. Louis-area group's debut album is filled with radio-friendly rock and pop songs, notably the leadoff track, "Shelter," which resembles Matchbox Twenty inspired by Linkin Park. Lead singer Ryan Jordan leads the proceedings on most of the album, with satisfactory guitar work by both Andrew Dwiggins and Marc Wanniger. But in some cases, the overall sound sounds a trace over-produced for its own good, moving into a territory only Def Leppard would be capable of pulling off. "Sustain You" and "Breathe" are lyrically quite good, but the arrangements are a bit soft in the middle leading ...
| | John Stewart Sunstorm CD (1971)
From Bliss To Devastation songs
$11.79 When John Stewart moved to Warner Brothers in 1971, his first album for the label, The Lonesome Picker Rides Again, stuck closely to the formula his Capitol albums did, but with a boatload more energy. Continuing to record in California, Sunstorm uses many of the same musicians who appear on Stewart's previous records, but there are some notable differences in its sound. Sunstorm was the first record where Stewart and producer Michael Stewart moved into the direction of an album that was assembled as much as it was recorded, and the sound is lusher, fuller. In addition, piano maestro Glen D. Hardin handled the musical arrangements. This can be heard from the delicate balance struck between acoustic guitars, pianos, and basslines on "Kansas Rain." The way the choruses fall in the backdrop just above the string section makes an evocative soundscape for Stewart's poignant lyrics. "Cheyenne" is a classic folk ballad cum country rambler with killer crescendos and pedal steel and fiddle solos. But it's not until "Bring It On Home" that the rollicking country-rock comes whistling in for the strike. With the handclaps (some of them done by Billy Mumy, aka Will Robinson from Lost in Space), large singalong chorus, and honky tonk piano that make Hardin's arrangements take full effect, Stewart's production makes the set feel live. Guitar legend James Burton plays not only guitar and dobro but sitar on the title track. There's a touching moment of Stewart with his father on "An Account of Haley's Comet." John Sr. recounts the personal story of his encounter with Haley's Comet, and Hardin assembles the musical accompaniment, with John Jr. and chorus singing the refrain. "Light Come Shine" is a cross-pollination of country-rock and gospel that is, with its grandiose chorus, corny at best, but it is redeemed by the Travis-style picking country of "Lonesome John." ...
