If avant-garde jazz artists decided to become headbangers, the most logical place for them would be math metal. The 2000s have given us a long list of technical metal bands that thrive on angularity and difficult time signatures, which of course, are also easy to find in avant-garde jazz. But some technical metal bands are more accessible than others, and Ills of Modern Man has more of a sense of groove than a lot of other technical metal discs. Despised Icon is a band that combines technical death metal with technical metalcore. Some of the vocals favor death metal's stereotypical "Cookie Monster" growl, and some favor the type of tortured screaming that metalcore and hardcore are known for; it would be inaccurate to describe Ills of Modern Man as either pure death metal or pure metalcore because it is, in fact, a combination of the two -- and whether one is hearing the "Cookie Monster" vocals or the screaming vocals, Ills of Modern Man aims for both complexity and vicious, head-crushing bombast. But again, this Montreal-based outfit is one of the more groove-friendly technical metal bands; they have achieved a balance of accessibility and angularity and aren't hard to get into if one has a taste for extreme metal. Since their formation in 2002, Despised Icon have had their share of lineup changes; on this 2007 release, the six-man lineup consists of Alex Erian and Steve Marois on lead vocals, Eric Jarrin and Yannick St. Amand on guitar, Sebastien Piché on bass and Alex Pelletier on drums. And that 2007 lineup works out fairly well on this decent, if mildly inconsistent, example of technical death metal and technical metalcore coming together. ~ Alex Henderson
Despised Icon: Alex Erian, Steve Marois (vocals); Yannick St. Amand, Eric Jarrin (guitar); Sebastien Piche (bass guitar); Alex Pelletier (drums).
Despised Icon Ills Of Modern Man Songs Ills Of Modern Man Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews One of the best heavy bands ever! Despised Icon are awesome! And The Ills of Modern Man is practically flawless. The only gripe I have is that the occasional 'chirping' death vocals on the album are a bit dated and don't belong. Otherwise, the album is killer. Like a lot of bands of this genre', Despised Icon have death growls, heavy guitars and breakneck drumming. They just do it better than everyone else. A little to much mancore not that i dont like hardcore but something about bands that rely too much on breakdowns turn me off.i mean after a while all breakdowns sound the same. Submitted by gwarknut (Louisville Ky) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Heaviest Ever I think that even though i have alot of heavy break downs in music, this cd is probably has the most brutal breakdowns. And best of all they have extra-ordinary blast beats on this cd. The quality is good and i suggest you just go out and buy it. Submitted by Nilz (Deridder, LA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Brutal!!! I highly recommend this album to any Despised Icon fan. If you are into slaughtered pig squeal vocals and masculine deep metalcore / deathcore slam breakdowns, this is a must buy! Defintly an album to play at your family reunion, or at an old folks home early in the morning. haha. Submitted by Jon (Jamestown, NY, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
destruction. a good cd to put on in the morning and stomp around smashing your flat up to.
its hard not to like this even though some tracks are a little bit messy arrangement-wise. hoever thats no real problem, because the consistently relentless onlaught of monolithtic riffs and blastbeats more than makes up for it. the production is very clean too. turn it up. "Are you readyyyy?!" With that question--an inquiry that begins as a growl and ends as a scream--Jonathan Davis provides a fitting beginning to this searing collection of relentless, metallicized thrash/funk. His question is well-posed; this is not music for the faint of heart. Producer Ross Robinson and Korn have found a formula that works: start with a layer of fuzz-soaked guitar, add some big beats, and ...

Ills Of Modern Man
$12.85 The heavy rock band From Behind combines the talents of the ex-Nazareth guiding light Manny Charlton, the former Samson singer Nicky Moore, and some of the most well respected musicians on the Swedish rock scene. The band's debut is a stripped-down, crowd-pleasing collection of vintage rock & roll, with its twin guitar attack on tracks like the Nazareth-like "Play Dirty" and "Queen Bitch" a particular highlight.
FROM BEHIND plays for the great masses, hungry for twin- guitar based songs, sung by one of Britain's leading rock vocalists; Nicky Moore. Nicky's CV is as long and impressing as the history of British rock itself. The former SAMSON front man, by some referred to as "the fat guy who replaced Bruce Dickinson", was in fact to large extent responsible for making Samson the British metal legend it still is today, putting the band to their highest chart positions during their career! After Samson disbanded he became part of Mammoth, literally the heaviest of all heavy metal bands, alongside John McCoy of Gillan fame. With a voice dripping with soul and emotion, his reputation as a great performer is up there with the likes of Paul Rodgers, Frankie Miller and Van Morrison. Currently touring with his own blues band, he's today as active as ever.Manuel "Manny" Charlton, a living legend, who from the start in 1968 until 1989 was the guitar player, songwriter and producer in one of the biggest ...
| | Lana Lane Secrets Of Astrology CD (2000)
Ills Of Modern Man
$14.29 Lana Lane has a spectacular voice. Honestly, a review of any CD by her could at least start with, if not consist almost entirely of, that statement. However, that really does not paint the full picture. On this album, Lane has surrounded herself with some incredible musicians, and the music is both powerful and all over the spectrum in terms of style. You will find songs on this disc that are quite definitely prog metal, but the majority of the disc is hard-edged prog. That said, there are softer songs that are just plain prog, minus the hard edge. The lyrical content of the CD is emotional and comes across as very honest; the vocals and music both add to those perceptions. The other interesting thing to point out is this: although much of the disc is influenced primarily by the harder-edged prog bands and prog metal outfits, there are moments on the album that come across as a harder version of progressive rock heroes Renaissance. In looking at all these facts, it is obvious to see that this CD is a well-rounded and dynamic progressive rock release with both stunning vocal work and musical performances. Lane's central co-contributor on the CD is Erik Norlander (Rocket Scientists). She is also joined by Arjen Anthony Lucassen, David Victor, Tony Franklin, Ed Warby, Cameron Stone, Novi Novog, Istvan Szeker, Mark McCrite, and Robert Soeterboek. ~ Gary Hill
Continuing in her established tradition of dramatic and powerful art rock releases, worldwide acclaimed symphonic rock artist Lana Lane announces SECRETS OF ASTROLOGY. The album features a lineup of predominately European musicians who bring the Lana Lane sound to a new high. The sound is expansive and atmospheric, suitably heavy, and even orchestral at times through the use live strings which supplement the symphonic rock sound.Lana's trademark soaring vocals lead the album supported by lush arrangements full of majesty and authority. Lana's vocals have been described as "angelic", "powerful", even "sorrowful". Indeed her unique ...
