| | Everette Harp First Love CD (2009)
Four Of A Kind II
$14.84 Audio Mixer: Erik Zobler. Liner Note Author: Everette Harp. On FIRST LOVE, contemporary jazz saxophonist and composer Everette Harp moves deeper into the space he addressed on 2007's excellent MY INSPIRATION. Produced by George Duke, the meld of acoustic and electric instruments here is perfectly balanced. Melodic and harmonic structures are much more complex and don't always fit the C-jazz cookie-cutter mold. Check his original "The Council of Nicea," one of the most satisfying things here. Harp's tenor is accompanied by James Genus' acoustic bass, and some spot-on breaks by Terri Lyne ...

| | Duke Ellington Unheard Recordings, PT. 2: Live At Monterey 1960 CD (1996)
Four Of A Kind II
$15.95 & His Orchestra/The Cannonball Adderley Quintet. This compilation features the second half of Duke Ellington's set at the 1960 Monterey Jazz Festival, along with a separate set by the Cannonball Adderley Quintet from the same year. Ellington's selections come from a later set following his band's performance, with the emphasis on Jimmy Rushing's bluesy but always swinging vocals. Instead of singing Ellington's songs, Rushing draws three songs from his years with Count Basie, along with the standard "On the Sunny Side of the Street." The singer sounds a bit hoarser than normal, but he wins over the crowd easily. A final instrumental track, "Red Carpet," from Ellington's "Toot Suite," completes the band's performance. The fidelity makes it sound as if the recording was made with a microphone placed near the rhythm section, as it is overly prominent compared ...
