(5 Customer Reviews)
The third album by R&B loverman Tank offers up more smooth urban contemporary grooves tailor-made for deep, soulful seduction. Tank's upbringing in the church is in ample evidence throughout in his impassioned, gospel-infused delivery, but most of the topics on SEX, LOVE & PAIN wouldn't pass muster with the local Reverend.
The vibe of the album is generally low-key, with bright, keys-heavy arrangements and call-and-response vocals with back-up singers (further contributing to the churchified feel), but Tank keeps things intimate with his pleading, flexible tenor and boudoir themes. Fans of Ginuwine, Omarion, and R. Kelly should check this one out.

Iraq ain't the only place to buy a good Tank! This album is well delivered. I'm glad to see that Tank hasn't given up. He is very talented, with a beautiful voice. I normally don't like male artists, so it has got to be one for the records...There's not one song I dont't like... Submitted by blyssny (Jersey City, NJ) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Sex, Love & Pain CD music
$16.99 This is Nashville soul from the mid-1960s through the early 1970s, all released on labels partly or wholly owned by Ted Jarrett: Ref-O-Ree, Spar, and Poncello. It's not often acknowledged that Nashville, known almost exclusively for its country music, also had an active black music scene, which makes this 26-track compilation archivally important. The fact still remains, though, that Nashville, and certainly these labels, did not develop an outstanding or distinctive soul style. It's easy to play spot-the-influences here, whether it's the gritty Motown of the Temptations, the smooth soul of the Northeast or the mid-tempo gospel-flecked blues-soul of Stax. In fact, Jimmy Tig's "Foolish Lover" sounds like an attempt at a mathematical fusion of "Love Is Strange" and "Stay," while Herbert Hunter's "Isn't It Wonderful to Dream" is unabashedly derivative of classic Ben E. King sides, and Thomas Henry's "Is It Love" rips a page from Major Lance's book. You're not going to recognize any of the performers, with the possible exception of the well-traveled Gene Allison, whose bluesy "It's Almost Sundown" (with a vocal delivery reminiscent of Sam Cooke) is one of the best cuts. There are some nice oddities here and there, like the Jades' ...
| | Gabrielle Rise CD (2000) Remixes
Sex, Love & Pain music CDs
$8.79 RISE (REMIXES) features a slew of remixes from the tracks off of R&B singer Gabrielle's album.
British singer Gabrielle's third album was a monster hit in Europe but caused barely a ripple in the United States. It is unfortunate because the album is quite engaging, and had it received the proper promotion, it may have even registered a hit single or two in America. This is sophisticated, mellow British soul-pop, somewhat akin to Simply Red. The songs are pleasant, but none really stand out as instant hits, although her Bob Dylan-inspired "Rise" became a huge European smash. The album has a subtle 1960s feel to it, especially on "When a Woman" and "Falling," which recalls Supremes-era soul-pop. For the most part, though, the songs register between slow to mid-tempo, save for a brief moment of funk on the tune "5 O'Clock." Standout cuts include the ballad "Should I Stay," which, of all the gems on this set, seems the most hitworthy. "Only You" has a lush, beautiful string section, and the album's opener, "Sunshine," flows with an interesting groove. A good album, and surely deserving of more attention than what it received in the United States, especially considering the following she garnered with her first (and only) stateside hit, "Dreams." ...
