TRICK OF THE TAIL was Genesis' first LP after the departure of Peter Gabriel.
This was Genesis' first album following the departure of vocalist Peter Gabriel. After ascending the heights of conceptual progressive rock on the preceding THE LAMB LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY, Genesis was left between a rock and a hard place, trying to define its identity anew. With the odds against them they put in a fine showing on TRICK OF THE TAIL. The general musical mode is similar to that of LAMB--longish songs with well developed structures and arrangements and a straighter rock feel than the band's early work.
Lyrically, the band didn't attempt to equal Gabriel's conceptual mastery, choosing instead to tackle discrete subjects on each song; "Squonk" is about a mythical beast, "Entangled" centers around an unpleasant hospital stay. Phil Collins, technically a better vocalist than Gabriel to begin with, steps up admirably as lead singer (he'd already sung lead on a couple of earlier Genesis tunes), but despite the popular myth he didn't take over the band. He receives co-writing credit for only two songs on TRICK OF THE TAIL, an album that's very much a group effort.

RipplesQ (12/94, pp.162-3) - 3 Stars - Good - "...notable for the title track and the tender ballad `Ripples,' but a momentum was carrying them away from anything like a cutting edge and nearer and nearer to the big bucks..." Mojo (Publisher) (3/01, p.82) - "...Largely written without thought as to who might sing it....Collins stepped into the breach - despite originally suggesting they proceed as an instrumental act." Trick Of The Tail Music Review Average Rating: (4.6 out of 5 stars) Continuance of "Voyage Of the Acolyte" In 1975, Steve Hackett, Mike Rutherford and Phil Collins put together a Steve Hackett solo album called "Voyage of the Acolyte". Solid and emotive Personally this album causes me a special emotional response. It is a perfect mixture of emotions and solid musical sounds ; one of the best albums in the mid-era of the band.

A "Must Have" Any fan of early to mid-Genesis needs to have this CD/DVD. I loved Genesis from "Nursery Cryme" up to about "Three Sides Live." "Trick of the Tail" could be their best post-Gabriel album; it's certainly my favorite. And this "new" version is superb! The companion DVD included in this package contains three videos (the "Ripples" video is a joy to watch), a modern interview with band members, and a 53-minute concert from 1976 that includes Bill Bruford helping out on drums. (Watch for Bruford and Collins going at it together on "Cinema Show." Chilling and awe-inspiring. The audio quality of this concert is quite good.) I simply loved this CD/DVD. It's a "must have" for any Genesis fan. Submitted by Ric (Puget Sound, WA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$8.79 The essence of progressive music is characterized perfectly on Voyage of the Acolyte, Steve Hackett's first solo album. The former Genesis guitarist uses his instrumental mastery to conjure up musical images of sorcerers, magic, and old English castles with the primary use of keyboards and electric guitar. Phil Collins on drums and vibraphone and Mike Rutherford on ...

Trick Of The Tail CD music
$7.59 Jefferson Airplane were less focused in 1969 than they had been in the Summer of Love two years before. Recorded at the Fillmore East, these performances find the Airplane coming off their most recent album, Volunteers, released a month earlier, with the band a lot looser (drug use aside) and fractured. The factions ...

Trick Of The Tail music CDs
$16.35 Peter Gabriel was such a charismatic frontman and unique singer/lyricist that many assumed Genesis would fold after his departure. WIND & WUTHERING proved that there was much to the group than just Gabriel's talents. Drummer Phil Collins, who'd sung a couple of songs on previous albums, had taken over lead vocal duties on the previous A TRICK OF THE TAIL, with surprisingly successful results. His voice wasn't as edgy as Gabriel's, but was a bit more palatable to mass audiences, and the group's popularity continued to grow. Many of the songs here pick up musically where LAMB and TRICK OF THE ...

Trick Of The Tail songs
$17.05 Digitally remastered by Nick Davis, Geoff Callingham & Chris Blair.
When guitarist Steve Hackett left Genesis for a solo career after touring behind 1977's WIND AND WUTHERING, he was the second major defection the group had suffered in as many years. Instead of helplessly disintegrating, the remaining trio circled the wagons and bounced back with the solid AND THEN THERE WERE THREE.
Rather than employ any outside studio musicians to take up the slack, Tony Banks, Phil Collins, and Mike Rutherford instead played every instrument themselves. Resolutely reflective throughout, this 1978 ...
