Though Bob Marley and the Wailers cannot be said to have invented the style, they certainly brought it to the world stage, and this album was the torch that lit the way. Singing entirely in English, this Spanish group offers rock that sounds influenced by both 1960s rock and 1960s revivalists on Take Me Take Me. And as is the case when the originals go through more generations, the freshness fades more with each iteration. It's a well-done but somewhat anonymous mastery of the elements, with the reference points easy to pick out: Byrdsy guitars, Beatlesque harmonies, swirling psychedelic sitar, an inversion of Pink Floyd's "Lucifer Sam" riff on "I Know Your Bird," Move-ish-ish acoustic rock on "Together." Earl Foss’ Brown Derby is an indie-country band from Madison, WI. The versatile 7-piece band, including pedal steel and male/female vocal harmonies, makes the most out of singer John Kunert’s songs, which run the gamut from honky-tonk to southern rock to lush dark “indie” pop but are mostly rooted in the sounds pioneered by real country greats like George Jones, Waylon Jennings, Gram Parsons and Buck Owens and Willie Nelson. The Brown Derby’s debut show was at a tiny Madison coffee shop in January 2006.
