| | Magical Gathering: A Clannad Anthology CDs (2002) Digipak
Atiendi Asturies CD music
$15.65 As a survey of the first quarter century or so of Clannad's recording career, this double-CD compilation is intelligently selected and annotated. It draws pretty evenly from the various phases of the group's lifespan, from their most traditional folk-based albums in 1973 and 1974 to the slicker rock, pop, and new age-influenced sounds that gave them some crossover pop success in Europe and America in the 1980s and 1990s. Their most well-known tracks, and cuts with celebrity cameos, are here: the big early-'80s British hit "Harry's Game," "In a Lifetime" (with Bono of U2), "Something to Believe In" (with Bruce Hornsby), "I Will Find You (Theme From 'The Last of the Mohicans')," and four early-'80s songs on which a young Enya (then known as Eithne Brennan) was a vocalist with the band. No criticism can be levied at the packaging, complete with a 44-page booklet of liner notes. What's more problematic is the variation in quality, as the band changes from an exciting group who merged traditional ...

| | Cabaret Voltaire Living Legends CD (1990) Singles
Atiendi Asturies songs
$11.39 Recorded between 1975 and 1981. Originally released on Rough Trade Records.
If one needs a starting place to discover how an obscure trio of Sheffield sound experimentalists became one of the founders of industrial/EBM music, not to mention a whole range of artists interested in pushing the boundaries of recorded sound, The Living Legends is it. Conveniently collecting the series of singles the classic trio line-up released on Rough Trade Records, Legends makes for astonishing listening even today, alien now as it was then, and perhaps even more so. Compiled in more or less chronological order with a few exceptions, the tracks range from the quietly mysterious to astonishing, in-your-face sonics. The earliest single, "Do the Mussolini," and its various B-sides initially cast the band as gloomy, dour figures interested in fooling around with tape machines, rhythm boxes and a sense of echo that always made them sound like they were recording in the deep bowels of the ...
| | Tim Lake We All Need Heroes CD (2004)
Atiendi Asturies album
$20.25 Tim Lake is a folksinger with a song to sing, a man on a mission on We All Need Heroes. He kicks off with the buoyant, jaunty "Are You Ready?," a song that adds a bit of a spin to the Second Coming. He turns his refrain, "Are you ready?," into an honest to God question, suggesting that many true believers might not be as ready as they think they are. Lake is an eclectic folksinger, never getting too bogged down in questions of authenticity. On the opening cut, he borrows from rollicking gospel, while the follow-up, "It's You," sounds like a lazy bit of blues or jazz from the 1920s, complete with clarinet. His material is likewise eclectic. He can be a broad social critic and satirist, as on the first cut, a straight singer/songwriter on "It's You," and a storyteller on the title cut. Lake also has a knack for adding politics to the mix without being overly obvious. On the title cut, for instance, he notes that while everyone needs heroes, there's a price to pay: heroes, with families and friends like everyone else, don't always come ...
| | Warren Baker 77 Sunset Strip CD (1959) (Import) United Kingdom
Atiendi Asturies CD music
$12.45 Although Efrem Zimbalist Jr. (Stu Bailey), Ed Burns (Gerald Lloyd Kookson III) and Roger Smith (Jeff Spencer) are prominently displayed on the outer jacket artwork, they don't actually appear on this album, which consists of Warren Barker-led orchestrations. Likewise worth mentioning is that the original soundtrack to 77 Sunset Strip doesn't include Burns' million-selling solo hit "Kookie, Kookie (Lend Me Your Comb)," either. Featured within ...

| | Echoes Of Eternity Forgotten Goddess CD (2007)
Atiendi Asturies songs
$13.85 Faithful fans will be the first to admit that heavy metal is rarely sexy (sexist? Yes; sexy? No), but Echoes of Eternity are clearly a band at ease with their sexuality -- or at least at ease with letting vocalist Francine Boucher flaunt her sexuality. (Not a bad way to start a review: with five out of forty words being variations of "sex.") Unfortunately, as fetching as she may be, Echoes of Eternity's frontwoman rarely manages to establish herself as a focal point on their 2007 debut, The Forgotten Goddess, based solely on her vocal talents. To be fair, her failure can be blamed in part on the overbearing nature of the group's music, which consists of intricately arranged extreme metal riff and percussive constructions, regularly offset by copasetic and counterpoint melodies. Although these elements offer an impressive range of ...
