This project is born by the mind of MZ (also Locus Mortis & Urna) on the instrumental side, with the target to propose a doomish mood, obscure and melancholic picture to mind-expanding states. The result is a sorrowful but in the meantime dangerous Celestial Dymphonic Doom Metal with melodic Black Metal influences and an age to the infinite. Ubi Secreta Colunt
$12.78 It's hard to not be impressed by the sheer sonic onslaught that is otherwise known as Nile. Except to the most hardened death metal fanatic, the genre has a way of sounding the same after a while, but Nile is one of the few exceptions -- able to put their own unmistakable fingerprints on this heavy duty style (Egyptian-influenced lyrics ...

| | Toby Keith American Ride CD (2009)
Ubi Secreta Colunt
$11.99 With most contemporary country artists, you could guarantee that a song called "American Ride" would be a slice of jingoism, but Toby Keith isn't like most country singers. His "American Ride" casts a cynical eye at desperate housewives and wannabe pop stars, not celebrating down-home values but wondering where we're all headed on this American Ride at the end of the 2000s, a sentiment not all that far removed from some of Keith's previous social commentary, which makes it a mild surprise that it is the only song here that doesn't come from his own pen. As superb and striking as it is, it's not necessarily a good keystone for the rest of the record, which does have a few tougher numbers that pick up on the lean, mean vibe of 2008's THAT DON'T MAKE ME A BAD GUY -- "Every Dog Has Its Day," the sly "If I Had One," and the heavy blues stomp "Loaded" -- but spends more time on the softer side, even when he kicks up a bit of dust on the dancefloor on "You Can't Read My Mind" or does a funny, respectful salute to military life on "Ballad of Balad." In other words, the real touchstone for the rest of the record is "Tender as I Wanna Be," where he lets his guard down and lets the romance flow. This doesn't turn AMERICAN RIDE into ...

$8.95 The album's opening track, "Sweet Leaf," a salute to one of the band's favorite smokeable substances, contains one of metal's heaviest guitar riffs, courtesy of Tony Iommi. Another eternal band favorite is the grim, post-nuclear war tale "Children of the Grave." ...

| | Rhapsody Of Fire Triumph Or Agony CD (2006) Bonus Tracks; Special Edition
Ubi Secreta Colunt
$14.35 Even though unforeseen trademark conflicts forced Rhapsody to expand their name to Rhapsody of Fire prior to this, their seventh studio album, it's good to see that nothing else has changed about the Italians' highly dramatic and orchestrated fantasy pomp metal. And why should it have? After all, no one knows drama like the Italians (except perhaps the Greeks), and Rhapsody -- forgive me, Rhapsody of Fire -- would be silly to let something as trivial as a name change alter their (thus far) very successful career course? Rather, the sextet appears even further emboldened and motivated by this unusual challenge, so that the questioningly titled Triumph or Agony only ups the ante (if that's possible) of their ambitions, which, as ever, include framing their core -- guitars, keyboards, bass, drums -- instrumentation with a full choir and symphony orchestra. Thus equipped, they deliver new unofficial chapters for The Lord of the Rings via the agonizingly triumphant title track, the frankly spectacular single "Heart of the Darklands," and the necessary showcase for frequent guest narrator, actor Christopher Lee, in "Dark Reign of Fire"; they offer stately, metallic marches like "The Myth of the Holy Sword" and "Bloody Red Dungeons" to highlight the 50-piece chorus behind them; and push the boundaries of both ...
| | Elliott Yamin CD (2007)
Ubi Secreta Colunt
$9.69 Elliott Yamin finished third in the fifth season of AMERICAN IDOL (he lost out to the bar-room blues-rock of Taylor Hicks and pop vocal theatrics of Katharine McPhee), and his self-titled debut delivers on all the promise of his well-received television performances. Nicely produced and put together, ELLIOTT YAMIN dabbles in a variety of styles, including ...
| | Excalion Waterlines CD (2007) (Import) Germany
Ubi Secreta Colunt
$14.15 Even though it emerged quite unexpectedly out of the depths of central Finland (the rock & roll capital of the world in the early 2000s?), Excalion's Primal Exhale was a pretty accomplished first album; flawed only inasmuch as the young band's arrangements were so damn ambitious and complex for a bunch of rookies. So it is that their second CD, 2007's H2O-obsessed Waterlines, shows notable growth in terms of polishing those rough edges to a bright, sparkling gloss in a bid to emulate their compatriot heroes (Nightwish, Sonata Arctica, etc.). Defining new songs like "The Wingman," "Life on Fire" and "Arriving as the Dark" are ...
