Fred Astaire and Jane Powell star in Royal Wedding. Astaire and Vera-Ellen star in Belle Of New York. ROYAL WEDDING: Dancing and romance collide in ROYAL WEDDING as a brother-sister dance team (Fred Astaire and Jane Powell) open their musical show in London shortly before the English royal wedding and find love of their own. Showcasing some of Astaire's most memorable dance scenes in film history--Astaire's hat-rack partner and his dancing on the ceiling (impressive even to those jaded by special effects)--this tale of finding true love when it's least expected, and least wanted, has delighted audiences since the movie's release in 1951.
Flirty Ellen and dance-focused Tom have escaped the clutches of many marriage-minded partners, keeping their joint entertainment careers their first priority. When they leave New York to sail for London to open a new musical show, Ellen leaves behind many besotted men but no regrets. But when a ladies' man (and lord) falls hard for Ellen, and a British girl in the dance chorus needs Tom's help to locate her fiancé, both brother and sister realize that this time love must come first.
THE BELLE OF NEW YORK: Turn-of-the-century New York City. Astaire is Charlie Hill, a playboy who falls head-over-heels in love with Angela Bonfils (Vera-Ellen), a mission worker, and attempts to woo her with his charm, dancing ability, and singing voice. Songs include: "I Wanna Be a Dancin' Man", "Let a Little Love Come In", "Baby Doll", "Oops", "Seeing's Believing", "Naughty but Nice", and "Bachelor's Dinner Song." Royal Wedding/The Belle Of New York Movie Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) ASTAIRE TIME Two very under-rated films in the Astaire canon, long overdue for DVD.
We always wonder why it took so long for MGM to realize that Fred Astaire and Vera-Ellen were made for each other. Both were technical perfectionists, she could do anything Astaire and their choreographers demanded of them, and they had a real rapport on screen. Although "Belle is very weak in the screenplay department, it at least two numbers that rank with the best things Astaire ever committed to film. The "Currier and Ives" montage has a tap duo finale that is really extraordinary. "I Wanna be a Dancin' Man" needs no praise from me except to say: You'll want to watch it again immediately after you see it the first time. (If you like the movie and you crave more Fred and Vera, you should run out and buy "Three Little Words", too.)
"Royal Wedding" is even better. It has a tinge of autobiography as the plot revolves a brother-and-sister act, which Astaire new a few things about. (He spent his vaudeville and Broadway years partnered with his sister Adele.) Although Jane Powell isn't a great dancer, she has that good old Metro verve and is a good partner for Astaire. The pretty silly number "How Can You Believe Me When I Say I Love You (When You Know You've Been a Liar All My Life)?" still makes me laugh when I watch it, after all these years.
Fred Astaire's name on any DVD box is a guarantee of solid entertainment. I can't think of a single other movie star who has given me as much pleasure. Submitted by dce1249 (Cambridge, MA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Royal Wedding/The Belle Of New York film
$10.19 The grisly and debauched film PATHOLOGY is a juiced-up medical thriller that plays like FLATLINERS with a mean streak and a broken moral compass. Writers Mark Nelvedine and Brian Taylor have created a premise allowing for CSI-like forensics along with heaps of sex and violence, truly making the most of the film's R-rating. A high-end exploitation film with good performances, PATHOLOGY is strong enough for horror fans and should go down smoothly for non-squeamish viewers with a taste for the dark side.
Gifted med student Ted Grey (Milo Ventimiglia, HEROES) arrives at a major Washington, D.C., as an intern, where he is met with suspicion and resentment by the tightly knit group of fellow young pathologists-in-training. Soon, though, Ted is accepted into their circle---where they each take turns committing a murder so that the others may prove their mettle by figuring out the cause of death and celebrate with drug-fueled orgies among the dead bodies in the hospital. Things change for Ted, though, when his law student fiancée, Gwen (Alyssa Milano), moves to the city and helps to scare him straight. Soon, crazed Wallace Stevens-quoting leader Jake ...

$13.55 Marcel Langenegger makes his feature-film directorial debut with the aptly titled DECEPTION, a film about secrets and lies. Jonathan McQuarry (Ewan McGregor) feels that life is passing him by.
