When tenor saxophonist Donny McCaslin first gained prominence, he sounded quite a bit like Michael Brecker and Bob Berg. Years have passed and McCaslin has grown into a very original improviser. In Pursuit, which features nine of his diverse originals, is full of moody and often melancholy but never dull music. McCaslin's solos are completely unpredictable, he is joined by a particularly skillful and alert rhythm section, and altoist David Binney often adds a second complementary voice. The music seems free in spots but is purposeful and ultimately logical. When McCaslin solos over just drummer Antonio Sanchéz and percussionist Pernell Saturnino during several stretches, his improvisations are particularly fiery and driven, with his raging solo on "Village Natural" being particularly inspired. This is a particularly strong example of modern jazz circa 2006. ~ Scott Yanow

Down Beat (p.64) - 4.5 stars out of 5 -- "McCaslin slow-builds his solos into hair-raising explosions of virtuosity. Hi composition skills have also blossomed." JazzTimes (p.78) - "Playing in an ever-shifting style that chatters and sings, digging into rhythmic underpinnings or breaking the bonds of gravity, McCaslin continually finds new ways to surprise and enchant." | | Mccoy Tyner Quartet CD (2007)
In Pursuit album
$13.49 McCoy Tyner's work with the John Coltrane Quartet is well documented, and this CD marks a welcome return to that format. | | Barney Kessel's Swingin' Party CD (1960)
In Pursuit songs
$9.89 In 1960, a title like Barney Kessel's Swingin' Party at Contemporary must have sounded more like popular slang than a style of jazz. And indeed, the double meaning was intentional: this live effort was recorded at a swinging record label party at Contemporary and the music performed by guitarist Barney Kessel is definitely swing. Backed by pianist Marvin Jenkins, bassist Gary Peacock, and drummer Ron Lundberg, Kessel explores a half-dozen classic tunes. The band kicks off with a nine-minute ...
| | Pulp Freaks CD (1986)
In Pursuit album
$13.69 The second Pulp album, 1986's FREAKS sees several changes from the band's debut of three years prior. The overall mood is much more sinister and aggressive (the album's subtitle is "Ten Songs about Power, Claustrophobia, Suffocation, and Holding Hands."), alternately recalling such early Smiths tracks as "Suffer Little Children" and some of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds' "The Carny."
FREAKS also finds main lyricist Jarvis Cocker handing over the vocal reins to guitarist ...
| | Gil Scott-Heron Anthology Messages CD (2005) (Import) United Kingdom
In Pursuit CD music
$23.65 Several Gil Scott-Heron compilations were released throughout the '70s, '80s, '90s, and early 2000s, but 2005's Messages was the first to concentrate on the material released between 1973 and 1979 -- a productive phase involving seven albums, most of which were represented by a track or two on the preceding overviews. Featuring multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Brian Jackson, these albums were often filler-prone but they were never lacking at least a few moments in which everything clicked. At their best, the duo collaborated on jazzed-up funk that, while far more somber and sober, was just as funky as -- and often more poignant than -- anything on Sly & the Family Stone's There's a Riot Goin' On. This is a shame ...
