| | Paula Deanda CD (2006)
Atrevete CD music
$7.59 With an equal emphasis on sultry R&B ballads and uptempo dance-pop, Paula Deandra's 2006 self-titled debut can easily be filed next to contemporary R&B divas like Beyonce and Mariah Carey. The album's lead-off single, "Doing Too Much," a gliding slow jam with a pulsing, hip-hop-flavored beat and sweet backing vocals that recall Destiny's Child, is an excellent example of what the artist does well. Yet Deanda's voice and lyrics add a bit of bite to the glossy R&B, and that distinctive twist, along with major label support (the artist is signed to Arista), make the singer a talent to watch.

| | Life Is But A Dream: The Very Best Of The Harptones CD (2000)
Atrevete music CDs
$10.59 A more apt title for this CD would be "The Very Best of the Harptones and Friends." Among the 18 tracks are two done with Peggy Farmer and two with Ruth McFadden. Farmer and McFadden have one tune in common with the Harptones, "Dreamin's No Good." All the other selections, except "You're Going to Need Me Somebody" and "You Know You're Doing Me Wrong," have two takes. For instance, you get take one and take 20 of "On a Sunday Afternoon." This is mellow East Coast doo wop with a modern harmony feel. Not comprehensive or a complete overview by any means, but special because ...

| | Count Basie Basie Boogie CD (1995)
Atrevete songs
$12.79 One of three compilations issued by different labels in 1995 bearing the title Basie Boogie, this 1995 Jazz Hour release combines recordings made during Count Basie's brief European tour during early 1959. On the third of February, the Basie band performed at the Theatre Beaulieu in Lausanne, France; three days later they wowed the crowd at the Kongresshaus in Zurich, Switzerland. The atmosphere at both of these concerts was joyous and celebratory. Everything on this album, especially "In a Mellow Tone," "Little Pony," and "The Kid from Red Bank," showcases Basie's late-'50s band at its very best. For those who never caught the Count in person, this little Jazz Hour will convey some of the positive vibrations that invariably occurred in his presence. ~ arwulf arwulf
