| | Mooney Suzuki Have Mercy CD Mooney Suzuki Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
The Mooney Suzuki deliberately flew in the face of indie-rock rules by somewhat perversely hiring mainstream hitmakers the Matrix (Avril Lavigne, Liz Phair, etc.) to write and produce their third album, ALIVE AND AMPLIFIED, a critical and commercial flop that lost the band their major-label deal. Three years later, the Mooney Suzuki pretend that album never happened on HAVE MERCY, smartly picking up where 2002's ELECTRIC SWEAT left off, with noisy but catchy garage punk heavily influenced by the Stooges and the MC5. HAVE MERCY is a swaggering, punchy, glorious mess of a record capturing everything that's great about the Mooney Suzuki.
The Mooney Suzuki: Graham Tyler (guitars); Sammy James, JR. (bass instrument); Will Rockwell-Scott (drums).
Additional personnel: Michael Bangs, Reno Bo, Danielia Cotton (vocals); Kevin Salem (guitars); Danny Wilensky (flute); Michael Magro (clarinet); Elizabeth Dotson-Westphalen (trombone); Rob Arthur (keyboards).
Entertainment Weekly (p.69) - "MERCY's rootsy, rueful tunes have a pleasant, low-key feel....An auspicious sign for their future." -- Grade: B Alternative Press (p.143) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "On the whole, the songs are more tuneful and airy and less spastic than previous riot-on-the-stage efforts." CMJ (p.44) - "[T]he hooks of tunes like '99%' and 'Good Ol' Alcohol' prove their in-your-sleep songwriting chops." Have Mercy
$10.49 THROUGH THE TREES, the group's third album, is full of beautiful, hummable songs one imagines being performed by inebriated Appalachians, sitting around a camp-fire hootenanny in, say, 1937, trying to see who'll crack up with laughter at their tale and who'll begin to cry. Their songs are populated ...
| | Mooney Suzuki Alive & Amplified CD (2004)
Have Mercy
$9.89 Save a couple of tracks about the liberating power of rock (including the cowbell-banging title song), the tunes are all about getting down and dirty with the ladies (as the titles "New York Girls," "Loose 'n' Juicy," "Messin' in the Dressin' Room," and "Naked Lady" would indicate). The psychedelic cover art and Hammond organ-heavy "Sometimes Somethin'" gesture to the band's 1960s influences, and the production is undeniably contemporary, but the Mooney Suzuki's riff-driven boogie-rock is full-on retro '70s. ALIVE & AMPLIFIED makes ...
| | Black Rebel Motorcycle Club Howl CD (2005)
Have Mercy
$9.89 A significant departure for Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, HOWL finds the Los Angeles-based trio abandoning the cold, amped-up sound of TAKE THEM ON, ON YOUR OWN in favor of a more heartfelt, acoustic-oriented aesthetic. (It's noteworthy that ...
| | Dandy Warhols Odditorium Or Warlord Of Mars CD (2005)
Have Mercy
$12.69 With its cheeky title, which references a series of Edgar Rice Burroughs sci-fi novels, ODDITORIUM OR WARLORDS OF MARS would seem to have the makings of a concept album. The only real concept here, however, is the Dandy Warhols getting back to a warmer, more organic vibe after their amped-up, slickly produced 2003 outing, WELCOME TO THE MONKEY HOUSE. The contrast between the two records works wonderfully, and reveals that the Portland, Oregon band isn't afraid to tinker with its sound, moving from a synth-heavy ...

| | Gogol Bordello Multi Kontra Culti vs. Irony CD (2002)
Have Mercy
$9.95 The idea of colliding Romany music with punk may at first seem bizarre, but there's more common ground to be found than one might first suspect, not the least of which involves the rejection of authority and dominant cultural norms. Musically, the Romanies' exuberant celebration of life may appear the antithesis of punk's original nihilism, but both are kindled by a sense of immediacy, a "no future, let's play for today" atmosphere that fires every song. And so Gogol Bordello, while certainly unique, is not as odd as it may seem. The group long ago left the concept of borders, musical or otherwise, behind. The members may have met in New York City, but bar one, all traveled far to get there, arriving from Israel and a variety of Eastern European nations. Singer/lyricist Eugene Hutz brought with him his rich Ukrainian heritage, a gift for storytelling, a twisted sense of humor, and a sharp sense of irony. The bandmembers brought their excellent musicianship, a love of their own cultural sounds, and a magpie's delight in plundering from others. The group's name pays tribute to Ukraine's most feted author, Nikolai Gogol, whose distinctive style and leitmotif provide inspiration for Hutz's lyrics. Skipping stealthily from the real world to the surreal, the pugnacious to the paranoid, the singer spins out his tales of wonder and woe, commonplace occurrences and counterintuitive events. ...
| | Feist Let It Die CD (Import) + 5 Bonus TR; Japan
Have Mercy
$43.09 Japanese edition adds five tracks and features different cover art.
A longtime presence in the Canadian music scene, Leslie Feist contributed her breathy, expressive alto voice to releases by a diverse range of artists, including Peaches, Broken Social Scene, and the Norwegian duo Kings of Convenience. However, on Feist's solo debut, this talented singer/songwriter comes into her own with stories of love and light, and a melancholy kind of beauty not immediately apparent by the album's cryptic title, LET IT DIE.
Jazz-influenced and classically schooled, Feist possesses a voice with a distinctive intimacy often lacking in trained singers. This warmth complements the well-orchestrated compositions on LET IT DIE with an almost voyeuristic atmosphere, akin to hearing someone singing herself to sleep. On the bluesy spiritual "Lonely Lonely," rhythmic handclaps and sparsely picked guitar accompany Feist's haunting lilt, invoking the ghosts of Appalachia, while the Bee Gees' "Love You Inside Out" (here titled "Inside and Out") is ...
