Necessary Evil album
$11.99 With most contemporary country artists, you could guarantee that a song called "American Ride" would be a slice of jingoism, but Toby Keith isn't like most country singers. His "American Ride" casts a cynical eye at desperate housewives and wannabe pop stars, not celebrating down-home values but wondering where we're all headed on this American Ride at the end of the 2000s, a sentiment not all that far removed from some of Keith's previous social commentary, which makes it a mild surprise that it is the only song here that doesn't come from his own pen. As superb and striking as it is, it's not necessarily a good keystone for the rest of the record, which does have a few tougher numbers that pick up on the lean, mean vibe of 2008's THAT DON'T MAKE ME A BAD GUY -- "Every Dog Has Its Day," the sly "If I Had One," and the heavy blues stomp "Loaded" -- but spends more time on the softer side, ...

$12.78 It's hard to not be impressed by the sheer sonic onslaught that is otherwise known as Nile. Except to the most hardened death metal fanatic, the genre has a way of sounding the same after a while, but Nile is one of the few exceptions -- able to put their own unmistakable fingerprints on this heavy duty style (Egyptian-influenced lyrics and musical ...

| | Teada CD (2003)
Necessary Evil album
$13.25 Ireland's Téada might have become a five-piece, having added a button accordion player, but their self-titled debut catches them when they still had four members, making a joyful and extremely melodic sound. With two multi-instrumentalists in John Blake (flute/guitar/piano) and Sean McElwain (bouzouki/banjo) they can add plenty of textures ...
| | Virgin Black Elegant And Dying CD (2003) Import
Necessary Evil CD music
$18.59 Virgin Black should get some kind of prize simply for having the audacity to name their sophomore album Elegant. . .and Dying. But let's not be too hard on this Australian quintet over such matters because, after all, this extravagant title actually suits their outrageously over-indulgent, but equally awe-inspiring dark metal symphonies perfectly. Much of the credit for this feat must go to singer, chief songwriter, and head vampire Rowan London, who put his money where his mouth was (literally!) by taking vocal lessons with a professional opera singer prior to this recording. He could still use a little work, but his pipes already show a marked improvement over 2001's (at times cringe-inducing) Sombre Romantic, as he steps to the fore on opener "Adorned in Ashes." As for the more reliable musical portion of Elegant. . .and Dying, brazenly ambitious epics such as the nine-minute "Cult of Crucifixion," and the 20-minute behemoth "The Everlasting," might look overwhelming on paper, but such is the nature of the album's cohesive start-to-finish ambience ...

| | Marduk Dark Endless CD (2005) (Import) Sweden
Necessary Evil CD music
$13.89 In 2007, Regain Records reissued several albums Marduk had recorded in the '90s, including Dark Endless, Those of the Unlight, Opus Nocturne and Heaven Shall Burn. The oldest of the bunch was Dark Endless. Recorded in 1992, Dark Endless was Marduk's first official full-length album, although not the very first thing they recorded (the infamously titled Fuck Me Jesus demo of 1991 had already earned them a small cult following in the Scandinavian extreme metal scene). Of course, a lot of things changed in extreme metal between 1992 and 2007. The death metal/black metal field became more diverse, Scandinavia became the part of the world with the heaviest concentration of death metal bands, and more people realized that black metal and death metal -- although closely related and often combined -- were two separate things. Dark Endless came at a time when Marduk had only been together two years (the band was formed in 1990) and black metal was quite young -- so young, in fact, that some listeners assumed the album was death metal and didn't pick up on the differences between death metal and black metal. And that is understandable because early death metal and early black metal were both ...
