| | Jon T Howard Time For Something New CD Jon T Howard Discography of CDs
Jon T. Howard spent part of his youth in Dallas, which seems to qualify him as a Texas singer/songwriter in the tradition of Steve Earle. He sounds a bit more like Steve Forbert, however, with his gravelly voice. Time for Something New is an effective collection that touches some of the usual bases for singer/songwriters, with Howard contributing his observations on world affairs on "In the Eyes of Love," but spending most of his time on affairs of the heart, which don't sound like they're going all that well. Indeed, the title song is an account of being dumped. Howard sings of his father on "Corpus Christi" and elsewhere describes the down-and-out lives of other characters in his story-songs. His songs are craftsmanlike, and one can imagine one or two of them sneaking into the country charts if recorded by a more mainstream country artist. But the Texas singer/songwriter field is a crowded one that contains many talents more distinguished than his. ~ William Ruhlmann

| | Lizzie West Holy Road: Freedom Songs CD (2003) Enhanced CD
Time For Something New
$11.39 Lizzie West has lived her life as a wanderer. Time spent traveling cross-country shaped her sunny character as a young 20something and strongly impacting her work as a poet and as a songwriter. West's self-titled EP was merely a glimpse into her wild imagination, and Holy Road: Freedom Songs vividly reflects upon her spiritual quest, collecting some of her brightest adventures for a brilliant debut album. What makes Holy Road: Freedom Songs inviting from the start is its mellow vibe. Each song has its own personality, and West isn't strict in style even with the album's slight country feel. She's a little bit folky on "Monkey Back Blues" whereas "Jenny" coasts with dark, jazz-inflected beats for a sweeping orchestrated moment. West is used to coming and going, and her wispy, aged-like vocals convince you that leaving what's most familiar shouldn't be scary. Exploring the unknown refuels the mind and soul, and West knows it well; from the acoustic splendor of "Hit the Road" to the harmonic heartache of "Time to Cry," West is strong in her convictions of making it on her own. "Dusty Turnaround" is earthy and pure, highlighting a child-like innocence in West's songcraft. Holy Road: Freedom Songs, in a literal sense, is a simple storybook, but lush in dreams. Dismiss ...

| | Jamie Brockett Remember The Wind And The Rain CD (1969)
Time For Something New
$9.99 Folksinger and composer Jaime Brockett's debut album, Remember the Wind and the Rain (1971), easily demonstrates why readers of Broadside magazine heralded him as Boston, MA's top male performer circa 1968. Brockett's emotive side is revealed on the title track, "Blue Chip," and the hauntingly beautiful "Nowadays," juxtaposed against the anti-authoritarian hippie anthems "Talkin' Green Beret New Super Yellow Hydraulic Banana Teeny Bopper Blues" and the nearly quarter-hour "Legend of the U.S.S Titanic." Even though the latter sounds like an amphetamine-fueled rave, it includes a coded message and some sage advice: if one has the need to partake of recreational combustibles, it should be done "in the privacy of your own home." This is opposed to imbibing on the bow of a ship -- as the narrative blames a pot-tokin' first mate as the responsible party for the vessel's fate. "St. Botolph ...
