Until the early 21st century, females fronting extreme metal bands were virtually unheard of. But with the emergence of groups such as Arch Enemy, the genre is no longer comprised solely of male musicians -- which has subsequently opened the doors for other similarly styled bands, including Deadlock. Two years after their 2005 debut, Earth.Revolt, comes their sophomore set, Wolves, which sees part-time vocalist Sabine Weniger signed on full-time. Weniger's melodic vocals are split evenly with Godzilla growler Johannes Prem throughout, with the album opener, "World Domination," being a prime example of "the Deadlock sound." But there's not much "metallic groundbreaking" going on here, just a whole lot of riffing and precise double bass drumming, in addition to Weniger and Prem's alternating vocals, which isn't much different from the boatload of other similarly styled metal acts on the scene. ~ Greg Prato

Wolves
$13.59 Blind Guardian fans have grown accustomed to waiting long periods between the band's studio albums, which these masters of German progressive power metal tend to deliver only every four years or so -- much like World Cups, curiously enough. That was precisely the gap separating 2002's A Night at the Opera, which dismayed some longtime fans with its nearly symphonic, unusually complicated compositions, and 2006's A Twist in the Myth, which establishes something of a middle ground between that trend and the group's slightly more approachable earlier material. Of course Blind Guardian, by any era or definition, can still be counted on to inject enough pretentious pomp into high-flying metal anthems such as "This Will Never End," "Straight Through the Mirror," and especially album standout "Turn the Page," to make Ronnie James Dio pull out his fantasy almanac, get Freddie Mercury nodding in posthumous approval. Speaking of ol' Mercury, "Carry the Blessed Home" marries Queen-sized guitar and vocal orchestrations to BG singer Hansi Kürsch's recurring extrapolations on Stephen King's Dark Tower novels; and his reading habits are given even further disclosure on the likes of "Otherland" (inspired by Tad Williams' ...

| | Echoes Of Eternity Forgotten Goddess CD (2007)
Wolves
$13.65 Faithful fans will be the first to admit that heavy metal is rarely sexy (sexist? Yes; sexy? No), but Echoes of Eternity are clearly a band at ease with their sexuality -- or at least at ease with letting vocalist Francine Boucher flaunt her sexuality. (Not a bad way to start a review: with five out of forty words being variations of "sex.") Unfortunately, as fetching as she may be, Echoes of Eternity's frontwoman rarely manages to establish herself as a focal point on their 2007 debut, The Forgotten Goddess, based solely on her vocal talents. To be fair, her failure can be blamed in part on the overbearing nature of the group's music, which consists of intricately arranged extreme metal riff and percussive constructions, regularly offset by copasetic and counterpoint melodies. Although these elements offer an impressive range of dynamic variety, often mirroring the work of Canadians Into Eternity, they simultaneously leave little room for the vocalist to take command of any given song (particularly Byzantine exercises like "Expressions of Flesh" and "The Kingdom Within"), only suffocating Boucher's timid crooning, instead. What's more, ...
| | November's Doom Novella Reservoir CD (2007)
Wolves
$12.15 In 2005, Novembers Doom made a giant aesthetic leap forward with The Pale Haunt Departure. It put their death metal roots even closer to subtle, multi-dimensional textures in a collection of songs that were not only memorable, but took the band to new levels in orchestrating vocalist Paul Kuhr's somber, often emotionally desperate lyrics. While it's true that the faithful engage in solid debate about the band's high watermark -- Pale Haunt or 2002's To Welcome the Fade -- with 2007's The Novella Reservoir it seems that ND have now laid down an unrelated trilogy of near brilliance in terms of evocative, musically and lyrically sophisticated heavy metal that seamlessly blends death metal, progressive metal, and near gothic soundscapes. There isn't an American band in the genre that comes close to what they do in terms of marrying metal's myriad songwriting forms, sonic adventurousness, and lyrical sophistication. Co-produced with Chris Djuricic, mixed by Dan Swanö, and mastered by James Murphy, the production quotient on this set is grander in scope than any ND studio set to date. The Novella Reservoir is more aggressive than its most recent predecessor without losing any of its melodic invention or textural depth. "Rain" comes crackling out of the gate with a death metal ...

| | My Dying Bride Turn Loose The Swans CD (1994) Digipak
Wolves
$9.99 After a series of EPs, two full-lengths, and a European tour, My Dying Bride had established themselves prior to this release, but Turn Loose the Swans, probably more than any other effort, confirmed the band's leadership position within the British death metal/doom metal movement. The gothic strains and pure depression of the band are in peak form on this recording. From the gentler strains of "Your River" to the deathly title track, My Dying Bride takes sorrow to new extremes on this Futurist release. Averaging a cool eight minutes apiece, each of this record's seven songs is dripping with treachery and pain, as the band's lyrical fascination with deceit and transgressions of every variety are apparent in every line. Some gentle string arrangements wind around the super-slow doom metal and sometimes-spoken, sometimes-screamed vocals, giving the record a dynamic twist that helped define the British death/doom sound. A strong early effort from My Dying Bride, Turn Loose the Swans should please fans of this band and their obscure genre. [The digitally remastered 2003 version came in a limited-edition digipak and featured the bonus tracks "Le Cerf Malade," "Transcending [Into the Exquisite]," and a live version of "Your Shameful Heaven."] ~ Vincent Jeffries
