Sweden's Skull Defekts deliver a hypnotically rhythmic style of noise rock on their 2007 release, BLOOD SPIRITS AND DRUMS ARE SINGING. Though the songs are rooted in rock riffage, there is a pronounced experimental streak running throughout: Skull Defekts compositions work up to a complex, layered, percussive fever pitch, dotted with clanging electronic loops, shards of guitar noise, and spare vocal lines. At its best, it's a sound that recalls the sublimely repetitive noise of Krautrock heroes Faust and Can.

After the initial shock fades, the existence of CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART seems perhaps inevitable. After all, the thing Bob Dylan loves most of all are songs that are handed down from generation to generation, songs that are part of the American fabric, songs so common they never seem to have been written. These are the songs Dylan chooses to sing on CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART, a cheerfully old-fashioned holiday album from its Norman Rockwell-esque cover to its joyous backing vocals. Former Be-Bop Deluxe leader Bill Nelson was brought in to produce this album and provide some soaring lead guitar work, but the collaboration with Numan was beset by difficulties involving Numan's ego and approach to recording. While Nelson's production is evident on many tracks and his guitar is heard in several places, much of this is business as usual (a B-side, "Poetry and Power," features more Nelson and has gone on to a great deal of popularity, especially with the Gravity Kills cover on Random). The science fiction influences here are Robert A. Heinlein's The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress and Harlan Ellison's "'Repent, Harlequin!' Cried the Tick-Tock Man." While there is some evidence of confusion as to his direction, the music and songwriting has more energy than anything on the predecessor, I, Assassin, with some genuinely engaging moments along the way. ~ Steven McDonald
