One day, pianist-arranger Bob Florence heard Annette Sanders' voice on the radio and decided that he wanted to work with her. He tracked her down on the internet and this CD is the result. The collaboration between the Los Angeles pianist and the New York studio singer was recorded with only a small amount of preparation which mostly consisted of picking out songs and keys. Nearly all of the performances are first takes. Emphasizing ballads with just an occasional medium-tempo piece (such as "Kissing Bug"), the performances have Sanders singing the melodies and lyrics very straight although with plenty of feeling, inspired by Florence's accompaniment and concise piano solos. The heartfelt interpretations fall between jazz and cabaret and set a thoughtful and often-melancholy mood. While few chances are taken, this intimate recital succeeds on its own terms. ~ Scott Yanow
Personnel: Bob Florence (piano); Annette Sanders (vocals).
JazzTimes (p.84) - "Florence's feathery touch, as softly inviting as waves lapping against a sandy shore, provides satin foundation for Sanders..." You Will Be My Music music CDs
$16.55 To paraphrase David Bowie, this ain't rock & roll. It's genre-cide. Showaddywaddy broke through with a pounding, spangle-soaked approximation of all that made the '50s palatable to an early-'70s Brit teen audience, and racked up three major hits in the blink of an eye. But just how glam were they really -- and how glam did they intend remaining? So aptly named if one believes there really was a fiendish plan to subvert a nation of glitterkids into zombie Eddie Cochran clones, Step Two arrived bereft of all but the most superficial layers of spangle and spark, confident in the knowledge that anyone who had traveled this far was hardly going to bail out now. And so it transpired. Step Two was just as big as its predecessor, and its hits were even bigger. Band originals consumed the bulk of the album, but whereas once the group could glitter with the best of them, now the drapes were tightly drawn, and the brothel creeper boots were the platforms du jour. Almost any one of the album's songs could have spun securely on ...
| | Pharoah Sanders Anthology: You've Got To Have Freedom CDs (2005) Import
You Will Be My Music songs
$32.59 This compilation of tunes from free jazz master Pharoah Sanders includes 18 tracks.
Taken from the labels Impulse!, Teressa & Arista, this is the first time that Sanders's most important works have been on one collection. Sanders's following is wide and diverse, from Coltrane lovers to the Hoxton Square hip! Compiled by Laurence Prangell at Soul Brother Records, this compilation puts all of Pharoah Sanders' major works on one album for the very first time. Sanders's works influenced a new generation when his music was a major influence on the UK's younger jazz dance scene during the late 80's and 90's. Regularly played by Gilles Peterson and his counterparts, his name and music still stands as the most spiritual and inspirational free jazz ever.
Anthology: You've Got to Have Freedom is exactly what it says but is also more. This two-disc set is culled from Pharoah Sanders' Impulse! catalog; it is these recordings that gave him his place in jazz history -- apart from the years he spent with John Coltrane. Sanders was unfairly pegged with carrying on the Coltrane legacy in free jazz; he was often called "the new Coltrane." This set confirms and underscores Sanders' reputation for being a truly restless and creative force in jazz. What makes this anthology so utterly special is that it is the first one of its kind to cross-license tracks from a number of labels. All of disc one and the first three tracks on disc two come from his Impulse! years from 1966-1974. Included here are some edited versions of longer tracks like "The Creator Has a Master Plan," "Black Unity," "Upper Egypt and ...
