If You Could music CDs
$14.45 Despite his statement in the liner notes that "In an era where it is best to play it safe, I chose to take a risk...," there isn't much surprising or risky about young guitarist Joe Bonamassa's fifth studio album. Most of his previous releases have mixed blues covers with his own originals, all played with a rocker's attitude, volume and less-than-subtle approach. This one follows suit and even though he goes on to say that he "wanted to make a blues album, not a rock album that has blues on it," as in the past; it's impossible to claim that he has succeeded with You & Me. That doesn't make this a bad or disappointing disc; quite the contrary, it's a solid blues-rock release and arguably his best work to date. But as early as the second track, an original rocker titled "Bridge to Better Days," Bonamassa takes off on an early Free/Savoy Brown-styled stomper. Things ...

| | Johnny Winter Still Alive And Well CD (1973)
If You Could album
$6.79 You might mistake this for a live record, but this is actually a 1973 studio release by the Texas blues guitar master. Winter's first release after a brief retirement/drying-out period, STILL ALIVE AND WELL, from the title on down, has the feeling of a major comeback, although Winter really hadn't been gone for very long. Looking hale and hearty on the cover--or as hale and hearty as a rail-thin albino can look, anyway--Winter sounds equally fit on the songs themselves. Produced by his longtime collaborator Rick Derringer, who also leads the tight and flashy band with his rhythm and second lead playing, the album is possibly the most pop-oriented ...

| | Jon Tiven Blue Guru CD (1996)
If You Could album
$10.99 Known for his production work with everyone from Frank Black to Nick Lowe, guitarist Jon Tiven also makes bluesy pop/rock in his spare time. Working with former Arrows frontman Alan Merrill, drummer Todd Snare (Wilson Pickett, P.M. Dawn), and Sally Tiven (his wife and former B.B. King bassist), Tiven has a wonderful talent for soulful blues-rock without a trace of needless guitar exercises. Tiven is all about the songs and puts more effort into writing good hooks and riffs than anything else. That may partially be why his talents as a guitarist are so underrated, but even his incidental playing on songs like "I Smell Smoke" is littered with perfect little flourishes and fills. His talents as a lyricist are not quite as impressive, but the excellent performance from Merrill makes lines like, "Ooh honey, this party's off the hook/I have to take a closer look" sound like Shakespeare when paired with Tiven's subtle guitar work. With so many blues-rock albums popping up every year, it is easy for a release like this to slip through the cracks. But to fans of the genre, this is some smoking stuff that contains these performers' best work in a long time. Professional sidemen don't often get showcases this impressive, but anyone wondering what these musicians ...
| | Walter Trout Go The Distance CD (2001)
If You Could CD music
$12.99 Additional personnel includes: Steff (accordion); Pat Register (saxophone); Scott Thompson (trumpet); Wally Bass, William Brown (background vocals).
One of the songs on Go the Distance that tells listeners a lot about Walter Trout is "I Don't Want My MTV," a humorous rock & roll number that finds the blues-rocker railing against MTV for -- as he sees it -- making image, looks, and physical appearance more important than the quality of the music itself. Trout even rewrites a line from Chuck Berry's "Roll Over Beethoven," singing, "Roll over, Martha Quinn, and tell Kurt Loder the news." The tune is a defining moment for Trout because it tells you a lot about him. "I Don't Want My MTV" expresses, without apology, Trout's impatience with slickness -- and whether or not you share his opinion of MTV, it is his down-home earthiness that makes Go the Distance an honest blues-rock/roots rock outing. Trout's sincerity is one of his strongest assets, and it comes through on gritty offerings like "Message on the Doorway" and "Lookin' for the Promised Land." This CD isn't for blues purists, however; Go the Distance has as much to do with roots rock as it does with the blues. But regardless of whether or not a song has 12 bars, Trout brings the feeling of the blues to everything he does. Go the Distance falls short of remarkable, but it's a solid, enjoyable effort that succeeds ...
| | Gathering Souvenirs CD (2003)
If You Could music CDs
$10.09 For those in the know, the release of Souvenirs was one to watch closely. In the two years since If_Then_Else, the Gathering had decided to push their more experimental side even further, as well as part ways with the label that they had been with for years (many said that it was the new directions of the Gathering and the inability of the label to market them that signaled the end). Fortunately, this band has learned to experiment with a fully realized sense of purpose, so it doesn't mean that Souvenirs has any wild new changes thrown ...
