2 Live Crew remain one of the most controversial Rap groups ever, due to the pornographic lyrics of Mr. Luther Campbell. But the 2 Live Crew story started long before Luther came along... 2 Live Crew began in California, consisting of Fresh Kid Ice, DJ Mr. Mixx and Amazing V. They released their debut single, 'Revelation', in 1985. The single sold well in Florida and Mixx and Kid Ice moved there, releasing 'What I Like' along with new member Brother Marquis. They received a record deal from Luke Skywalker Records (later known as Luke Records), which was run by Luther Campbell, who was also a manager. After a clutch of recordings by the trio, Luther joined the Crew and they became a rappin' quartet. 1986 saw the release of the album 2 Live Crew Is What We Are, featuring profane and sexually graphic lyrics. The record went gold and the rest is history... This compilation contains recordings by the original 2 Live Crew without Luke and includes their classic early singles and 11 others. Classic Collection album
$15.65 On THE BLUEPRINT 3, still unretired Jay-Z announces "the only rapper to rewrite history without a pen." It's a standard Jigga boast, but the Brooklyn icon has earned the bragging by backing it up, particularly on his gold-label, top-shelf BLUEPRINT series. Ever-ready for battle, Jay-Z takes on autotune, crossover radio, and many other hip-hop concerns with the gloriously jagged rap elan for which he's become known.
When Jay-Z first made a series out of his best album, 2001's The Blueprint, it became a game of high expectations. The first volume saw Jay-Z as vital as he'd ever been, storming back to the hardcore after a few years of commercial success. THE BLUEPRINT 2 took a different tack, with guest shots to compliment his sinuous flows. BLUEPRINT 3 is somewhere between the two, closer to the vitality and energy of the original but not without the crossover bids and guest features of the latter. Kanye West is in the producer's chair for seven tracks, and it's clear he was reaching for the same energy level as the original. "What We Talkin' About" begins the album with a wave of surging, oppressive synth, while Jay-Z ...

$10.49 "Guilty Conscience" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance By Duo Or Group.
"Forgot About Dre" won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group. DR. DRE 2001 was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. "The Next Episode" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group.
"Still D.R.E." was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group.
With 2001, Dr. Dre has managed to do the seemingly impossible: resurface yet again after a five-year disappearance from the rap game, and shatter all expectations. The first two tracks lull the listener into thinking this is going to be a mellow, G-funk outing, but when the piano loop and beat commence in "Still D.R.E.," it's obvious Dre is still light years ahead of the rest. The seemingly disparate styles of guest artists MC Ren, Snoop Dogg, and Eminem are all unified ...

| | Grant Green His Majesty King Funk/Up With Donald Byrd CD (1995)
Classic Collection music CDs
$11.05 Recorded in New York, New York on May 26, 1965. Originally released on Verve (8627).
This special collection contains both the classic Grant Green album HIS MAJESTY KING FUNK and trumpeter Donald Byrd's UP WITH DONALD BYRD. Both are treasured recordings by two stellar artists who were at the head of their class in the mid '60s. Green's portion is a rousing quintet session that features the young organist Larry Young, underrated tenor man Harold Vick, renowned percussionist Candido Camero, and the groovy drummer Ben Dixon. As the title indicates, this is a delightfully funky session that features such danceable cuts as Green's "The Selma March," Dixon's solid "The Cantaloupe Woman," and the energetic "Daddy Grapes."
Byrd's UP is an equally exciting, but more pop-oriented, session. Along with Byrd, Jimmy Heath, Kenny Burrell, a young Herbie Hancock, Bob Cranshaw, and Grady Tate is a group of unidentified vocalists that contribute both lyrics and melodic backgrounds to mixed effect. Notable are the performances of Hancock's "Blind Man, Blind Man" and "Cantaloupe Island" and John Lee Hooker's "Boom, Boom." Also included are some eye-brow-raising readings of such pop hits as "House Of The Rising Sun" and "See, See, Rider." In all, both collections fill a solid spot in the catalog of two stellar artists.
