1976's A NEW WORLD RECORD is both a classic of commercial '70s pop and an archetypal ELO album. From the outer-space synths and rich orchestrations that open the album to Jeff Lynne's meticulous production and Beatlesque melodies, A NEW WORLD RECORD is magnificent ear candy. Both ambitious enough to appeal to "serious" rock fans and ultra-catchy enough to sound terrific on Top 40 radio (the plaintively gorgeous, McCartney-like "Telephone Line" and the anthemic "Livin' Thing" were well-deserved smashes), ELO was one of the few '70s bands whose appeal covered both the FM and AM spectrums. The album even resurrects "Do Ya," ...

| | Jennifer Love Hewitt CD (1996)
Asteroid music CDs
$7.59 She was doing it before Britney Spears, and she was doing it better. Teen princess Jennifer Love Hewitt attained a level of popularity based predominantly on her immensely likeable girl-next-door appeal. But before she became a household name with TV's Party of Five and as the heroine of the I Know What You did Last Summer movies, she was recording albums. This eponymous CD was her second American release, and though she poses no threat to the Celine Dions and the Lorrie Morgans of the world, her feathery light voice is more soulful than you'd imagine. The tracks on this album are all R&B-flavored pop and adult contemporary, and, though they're slickly produced, they complement Hewitt instead of overpowering her. Yes, most of the lyrics are the usual teen odes to love, loss, and longing, but there's a maturity to them as well that transcends most cookie-cutter pop. On "I Always Was Your Girl," she sings "You put your friends through hell/that's why we get along so well," obviously not capitalizing on the "nice" girl image she was on the cusp of practically owning; on "Cool With You," she pines to right a relationship so that all can be cool again; and on "It's Good to Know I'm Alive" from the House Arrest soundtrack (in which she starred) she sings with such joy and abandon, you'll want to sing along, too. Depending ...
| | Kinks-Size CD (1965) (Import) Bonus Track; England
Asteroid songs
$10.49 A notable U.K. remastered debut, repackaged with original artwork; includes 12 bonus tracks: 'LongTall Sally', 'You Still Want Me', 'You Do Something To Me','It's Alright', 'All Day And All Of The Night', 'I GottaMove', 'Louie, Louie', 'I Gotta Go Now', 'Things Are GettingBetter', 'I've Got That Feeling', 'Too Much Monkey Business'(unreleased alternate take) and the previously unreleased 'IDon't Need You Any More'. 26 tracks total, also feautringthe top 10 hit 'You Really Got Me' and the classic 'StopYour Sobbing'. 1998.
Peter Dogget describes pop music careers in 1964 England like this: "[U]nless you were Cliff Richard or the Beatles you were likely to be forgotten within 12 months of your first hit." This album was initially intended as a way to cash in on the primal magic of "You Really Got Me" before the Kinks got too stale for the fickle youth. However, history would show that this tidy R&B combo had one of the most inventive and creative bandleaders in '60s and '70s rock & roll in Mr. Ray Davies.
This reissued, remastered version of the band's eponymous debut--complete with 12 bonus tracks, including the previously unreleased Davies composition "I Don't Need You Anymore"--may not hold up to the high level of The Kinks' groundbreaking work over the decade. But there are hints that Davies would become one of the most unusual and melodic songwriters of a generation. One listen to "Just Can't Go To Sleep" and it's clear the die was cast: Davies had a voice all his own. Dedicated fans will certainly enjoy THE KINKS, but this fine reissue would also be of interest to connoisseurs of young, white R&B on the order of the early Who and Rolling Stones.
KINDA KINKS, the band's second release, is more or less of a piece with its predecessor. On the previous album, however, the band had used covers to fill the spaces between the Ray Davies originals, and here the tracks are almost all penned by Davies (with the exception of their version of "Dancing In The Street"). Davies' lovelorn songs had yet to fully flower ...
| | Putumayo Presents: Brazilian Lounge CD (2006)
Asteroid album
$10.99 Electronica is a very global phenomenon, and serious world music enthusiasts will tell you that it isn't hard to find world/electronica hybrids coming from places ranging from Ireland and Scotland to Japan to North Africa. Electronica also has plenty of followers in Brazil, where club hounds have been combining Brazilian rhythms with jungle/drum'n'bass, trance, house, trip-hop, and many other club-friendly styles. Putumayo has described Brazilian Lounge as one of 2006's Brazilian/electronica compilations -- not electronica as in harsh, abrasive, forceful techno and rave music, but electronica in the softer chillout/downtempo sense. Much of the time, however, this 44-minute CD's electronica credentials are questionable. The use of some electronic programming doesn't automatically make your music electronica; hip-hop and new age (to use two disparate examples) are often heavily electronic, but neither is considered part of electronica. And for the most part, Brazilian Lounge is best described as a jazzy Brazilian pop disc that has some chillout and downtempo references but isn't aimed at a hardcore electronica audience. One needn't be heavily into electronica to appreciate this release. Anyone who has spent a lot of time listening to Ivan Lins, Astrud Gilberto, Ana Caram, or Ithamara Koorax will have an easy time getting into tracks by Bebel Gilberto (Joao Gilberto's daughter), Katia B, and others; Brazilian Lounge emphasizes the subtle, gentle, understated side of Brazilian pop (as opposed to, say, the more exuberant forro recordings that have come from northeastern Brazil) and does so with enjoyable results. Some of the artists on Brazilian Lounge are established veterans ...
