$5.55 CARNIVAL OF SOULS is the last studio recording with Bruce Kulick and Eric Singer before the return of original members Ace Frehley and Peter Criss.
Despite a 1996 press conference on the U.S.S. Intrepid that announced Bruce Kulick and Eric Singer were on a "paid temporary vacation," the two were dismissed months later after a reunion tour of the original make-up clad members proved wildly successful. As the sub-heading states, CARNIVAL OF SOULS is the last recorded efforts of Kulick and Singer with Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley. Drawing on music trends started as far back as the lean times of the '80s, CARNIVAL finds Kiss putting together a sound that draws from the dirge of Alice In Chains and the crunch of old-school Metallica.
Much more somber than prior Kiss albums, nihilism runs rampant on songs such as "Hate" and "I Walk Alone." The mid-paced tempos of "Childhood's End" and "I Will Be There" inject some variety into a mix that includes Middle Eastern guitar phrasing in "Seduction Of The Innocent." In addition to Kulick flexing his ...

| | Horrors Strange House CD (2007) Enhanced CD
Systematic Chaos music CDs
$9.99 On their singles and EPs, the Horrors proved they'd done their post-punk and freakbeat homework. With their debut album, Strange House, they push their sound forward, distill it to its rawest essence, and give it a few funhouse mirror twists and turns for good measure. Almost half of the songs on the album already appeared on previous Horrors releases, but the ever-so-slightly cleaner production here gives more definition to their black-on-black sound. The band kicks off Strange House by revisiting their cover of Screaming Lord Sutch's "Jack the Ripper," which begins at a zombie-slow pace, then suddenly speeds up halfway through, ...

| | Asleep At The Wheel 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection CD (2001)
Systematic Chaos music CDs
$6.79 Digitally remastered by Jim Phillips (Universal Mastreing Services West, North Hollywood, California).
20th Century Masters compiles a dozen highlights from a pair of albums Asleep at the Wheel recorded for MCA. Most of the inclusions come from Asleep at the Wheel, a fine 1985 album, with the others coming from the lesser Framed, from 1980. One key highlight is "This Is the Way We Make a Broken Heart," a John Hiatt song popularized by Rosanne Cash in the mid-'80s. Each album sounds of its time, which differentiates this material from Asleep at the Wheel's early- to mid-'70s prime, when the band employed a rootsier, less-produced sound. Most fans prefer that '70s sound to this '80s one. Still, even if Asleep at the Wheel were mostly inactive during the early '80s, releasing nothing between 1980 and 1985, it's good to have the highlights of that era compiled in a package like this with modern mastering standards and some annotation. In any event, you'll want to start with Asleep at the Wheel's prime recordings before moving on to this latter-day collection, as these '80s-era recordings are less than essential and of secondary interest. If you're fan making your way through the band's catalog, however, you'll find 20th Century Masters to be a convenient and well-assembled sampler of a minor stage in the evolution of Asleep at the Wheel. ~ Jason Birchmeier
