Yet another masterpiece by Dream Theater, they truly are the best! My favorite songs are 'The ministry of lost souls' & 'In the presence of enemies pt 2'. The rest is also great! Great Album ! Although a lot of true DT fans seem to have a problem to like this album i stil think it's a really good work. It might not be as progressive as some of their other stuff but whoever loves their music and their technical skills will definitely love this one, too !

Why??? New record company maybe??? Let's start by giving some background information...I've been a DT fan for almost 20 years, I've love almost everything they've ever produced. However, this CD is almost unlistenable. Don't get me wrong, Mike Portnoy is a marketing genius. He knows what he is doing. It just blows me away that he, or their new record company, would attempt to do some bad 80's metal re-hash. The lyrics are reminiscent of something Yngwie Malmsteen would have come up with. The individual performances are phenomenal as usual but I'm afraid they have alienated some of their core audience with this one. Again, Portnoy is not stupid...I just look at this as an attempt by Portnoy or the record company to reach a different audience. Unfortunately, I am not 18 and stories about vampires don't engage me no matter how good the playing is. Maybe I'm just getting old but this seems to be a blatant marketing attempt to "expand" Dream Theater's audience for the new record company. Only Dream Theater's next release will tell the story. P.S...if you want a good, heavy 80's reminiscent CD, go listen to Redemption, Origin of Ruin...blows Chaos away. Leave the dark, death type metal to Opeth and others who are much better at it. | | Badlands Dusk CD (2009) (Import) Japan
Systematic Chaos
$18.39 Dusk is Badlands's third and final album. It was originally recorded in 1992-1993 as a demo to submit to their label. In an interview on the Racer X site, Jeff Martin talks about Dusk: Dusk, or the tunes put on the album, were intended as demos for the next Badlands album after Voo Doo Hwy. We had worked up that group of tunes at rehearsals at Mates in North Hollywood two months before recording them at Good Night L.A by a friend of Ray's, Shea Baby. It's all 24 track full studio recording, but we did it all in less than 6 to 8 hours. We put the Mic's up, made sure they worked and Go! We recorded them primarily for Atlantic Records to hear and give us a budget for the full recording of the same tunes, if they liked what we had. They did not like the direction of the songs, for whatever the reason. Some months later we were dropped from Atlantic. At the time we were happy with that outcome and so was the Management, being that Atlantic was not doing anything for us anyway. We shopped new prospects. Almost every song was one-take recordings. I remember having floor Tom mic problems where we stopped to fix it, then restarted a song. But all in all, one takes. Even some endings were a little funky on my end, but Jake just flagged it off and we go to the next tune. I think Jake is the only one who did not make one mistake...if he did I did not hear it. Ray had about 50% of his lyrics together. The rest were what he called Jib-A-Jab. He would put a word or two on the front of a line and rest were all vowels. He was amazing at it, and most folks never could tell the difference. He would come up with his melody line by Jib-A-Jabbing. I think he had a harder time finding lyrics that fit his Jabbing, due to the timing and the percussive hooks he would come up with while scatting along. Nothing on Dusk was fixed, that ...

| | Papa Roach Infest CD (2000) (Import) Japan
Systematic Chaos
$26.19 Japanese edition of their successful 2000 full length debut album includes 'Legacy' and 'Dead Cell (Live' as bonus tracks. Geffen.
Papa Roach: Coby, David B., Tobin, Jerry. Additional personnel: DJ A.M. (scratches); Aimee Echo, Rodney Duke (background vocals). Recorded at NRG Recording Services, North Hollywood, California. Papa Roach was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best New Artist and "Broken Home" was nominated for Best Short Form Music Video. Includes 2 bonus tracks. Papa Roach's debut album Infest quietly became a Top 20 hit in the first half of 2000, slipping underneath the radar of most pop critics and fans. It's easy to see why the pop elite passed them by, since the quartet just isn't hip, and since they are pushing an amalgam of every heavy sound that was popular in the late '90s. Basically, Infest is pitched somewhere between the classic grunge/industrial of the early '90s with hints of late-'90s behemoths like Korn and Limp Bizkit. There's singing, but it's balanced by rapping, and the heavy riffs are run through effects boxes that give it the controlled distortion common to alt-metal; it's loud, but you can hear each note being articulated. Lyrically, there's a lot of angst here, directed at everyone from parents and society to themselves. Strangely, each member thanks their families and God in the liner notes, but that's sort of beside the point, since this has the form and feeling of angst-ridden, post-grunge, rap-riddled alt-metal. Is it good? Well, if you're not into this stuff, this won't change your mind, but the band does work up some energy, ...
