For highbrow music listeners, Latin pop supergroup Menudo may be more interesting for its impact as a cultural entity than for its music. Either way, LA HISTORIA represents both sides of the phenomenally successful teen outfit by tracing its evolution from its inception in the late 1970s through its incarnation in the early 2000s.
Menudo's savvy marketing gimmick revolved around the policy that its Puerto Rican members, recruited for the group in their early teens, would be ousted by the time they turned 16. While the sound has changed to reflect changing trends (a synth-pop sheen coats their '80s material while late '90s Menudo bears traces of urban contemporary), the core policy has kept Menudo's teen pop appeal fresh and authentic. Anyone interested in reviewing either Menudo's bubblegum tunes (including tracks with early member Ricky Martin, who, of course, went on to solo superstardom) or their singular status as a pop culture oddity will find what they're looking for on this comprehensive set.

Beginning with its double-LP debut in 1969, Chicago has always done things in a big way, so it's no surprise that the band's career-spanning box set (Group Portrait, an earlier box, covered only their first decade) is lengthy. There are five CDs, containing 94 tracks clocking in at more than six and a half hours, plus a DVD running another 40 minutes. In that time, Chicago's story is told, from the band's ambitious, eclectic beginnings through its two extended hitmaking periods and on into still popular work 30 years on. All but one of the band's 48 Billboard Hot 100 hits, 1969-1991, are included, the sole exception being the 1986 re-recording of the 1970 hit "25 or 6 to 4," which, of course, is featured in its original version. The American public (or at least the country-music-listening portion thereof) pretty much watched LeAnn Rimes grow up. She was only 13 when she recorded her smash album BLUE, which introduced the world to a remarkably precocious talent whose voice was on a par with that of Patsy Cline. Ever since then, she's gradually moved away from her traditional country beginnings--first toward a more contemporary country sound, and eventually to a straight-ahead pop approach not far removed from Mandy Moore or Jessica Simpson. This GREATEST HITS collection easily negotiates the drastic stylistic changes of Rimes's career, including a few tracks from each of the aforementioned phases.
