| | Woody Guthrie Story CD (2000)
Double Wide, Vol. 2 songs
$7.59 Recorded in New York, New York on April 26 & May 3, 1940. Includes liner notes by Dave Marsh & Woody Guthrie.
American folk music has produced few artists as gifted and complex as Woody Guthrie. Guthrie's talents as a singer, harmonica player, and guitar player were merely ordinary, but as a songwriter, storyteller, and provocateur Guthrie had few equals. Guthrie's genius lay in his gift for seamlessly integrating his leftist political principles into his tales of common folks. Nowhere is this gift more evident than on DUST BOWL BALLADS. The fourteen-song set, originally released in 1940 on two albums of 78s, contains some of Woody Guthrie's most immediate and vibrant compositions, not surprising given that Guthrie had lived ...
| | Steve Martin Brothers CD (1981)
Double Wide, Vol. 2 album
$9.69 With regard to Steve Martin's small discography, "the worst of the four" is how The Steve Martin Brothers is usually tagged, which isn't so harsh when you consider two of the other albums are classics and one is just plain old good. It's an oddball release for sure, with half devoted to standup -- very loose and stream-of-consciousness standup -- and the other half showing off Martin's self-taught banjo playing and his love of lively bluegrass. The worst thing about the album is the sloppy way the standup side is put together. What must be the intro to his "cocktail" act in Vegas is stuck in the middle of the set while other short bits are sequenced in a way so there's no momentum. Frustratingly, Wounded Bird's CD reissue only splits the standup side of the original album into two tracks, ...
| | Jerry Clower Clower Power CD (1992)
Double Wide, Vol. 2 CD music
$6.09 Jerry Clower is one of those comedians you either get or you hate. Generally, there's no explaining why you dislike a particular comedian, you just know that he or she grates on your nerves. Clower, however, pushes those buttons more than most, possibly because his country cornball act is often either too obvious or too backwoods for city dwellers. So be it; it doesn't matter to me anymore, ever since I've given up trying to understand comedy. I've come ...

| | Jeff Foxworthy Greatest Bits CD (1999)
Double Wide, Vol. 2 songs
$14.29 Jeff Foxworthy isn't just a comedian, he's a phenomenon. In the '90s, this Nashville comic came to unprecedented fame with his satire of Southern life, particularly of the folks he constantly (if lovingly) refers to as "rednecks." His "you might be a redneck if..." shtick lampoons the most outrageous aspects of trailer-park life as well as the everyday occurrences. GREATEST BITS gathers its tracks from Foxworthy's previous four albums, providing an excellent introduction to his work.
Foxworthy is careful to identify with the targets of his humor. Anytime he refers to his beloved rednecks, ...
