It's not too often that a band can get away with releasing a beat album as their introduction to the world. However, said band is helped significantly if the members are also all percussionists in hipster faves Tortoise, have had vast experience in various other side projects, one of the members is indie rock star extraordinaire John McEntire, and the label that is associated with the project is the influential and left-field leaning Stones Throw. Such is the case with Bumps, the three-man group comprised of McEntire, Dan Bitney, and John Herndon. Their self-titled debut is a driven, fast-paced record where none of the tracks reach much past the two-minute mark, and things like the ten-bar, nineteen-second "Thorny Joint" don't seem out of place, as the trio focus their efforts on playing layered, syncopated rhythms, combining kits with hand drums, other percussion, and the occasional synth, tympanis and toms the closest thing to a melody. But with all of this going on, the most surprising thing about Bumps is how straightforward it is. Most of the songs stay in 4/4, with few time changes or added effects to complicate them; not that the rhythms themselves are simple, but the truth of the matter is that Bumps is a beat album more than anything else, not made of samples or scratches or computer tricks. It's organic, live drumming, so it doesn't concern itself with bells or whistles. It's music that's begging to be mixed with old soul records or heavy bass rants and rapped over, and the band clearly knows this, choosing lots of hollow, old-school beats alongside the Latin- and techno-influenced rhythms. Bumps is a niche record, that's for sure, with sharp, interesting beats that manage to sound fresh even if they're just variations of the same theme, but it's also an album that's surprisingly fun, energetic, and exciting, an album that will definitely please the production-oriented, but should also interest anyone just wanting something a little off-the-radar. ~ Marisa Brown

| | Katatonia Night Is The New Day CD (2009)
Bumps CD music
$14.38 The latest album from Swedish doom rockers Katatonia, their first studio effort since 2006, is as moody and beautiful as their other latter-day work. The group's career can be marked in two stages based on the condition of singer Jonas Renske's vocal cords -- basically, after the band's first two albums, he developed health problems that prevented him from performing harsh death growls, and ever since the band has moved in an increasingly melodic direction, even covering ...
| | Music Of Eric Von Essen Vol. 3 CD (2002)
Bumps music CDs
$14.29 Eric von Essen never recorded as a leader during his lifetime, though he played bass and cello as a sideman on a number of memorable releases between 1980 and 1994. This third (and evidently, final) volume of his original compositions features a number of different artists, including a few who collaborated with him on earlier releases. Guitarist Nels Cline, with whom the composer made his recording debut, plays 12-string acoustic guitar with Ken Filiano's arco bass in the moving "Blues for Me," which isn't really a blues at all. Violinist Jeff Gauthier and drummer Alex Cline, both of whom appeared on von Essen's first date as well, join the guitarist and bassist Michael Elizondo for the tense, very complex "Unresolved." The brisk, Latin-flavored "It's Just One Big Party" showcases tenor saxophonist Chuck Manning and pianist Theo Saunders. The delightful trio arrangement of "Norton's Last Words" is not a slow, mournful elegy as its title might imply, but a catchy post-bop vehicle with superb solos by pianist Jeff Colella and bassist Putter Smith. "Finska Flues" is a roller coaster ride centered around Stacy Rowles' tasty flügelhorn. Kate McGarry contributed the vocals and the lyrics to the reflective "One Eye Laughs, One Eye Weeps," which she also performed at Eric von Essen's funeral. Jazz fans should regret the premature death of this talented composer before he had a chance to record ...
| | Maybe This Christmas Tree CD (2004)
Bumps songs
$9.25 Nettwerk's Maybe This Christmas albums are starting to become tradition, not to mention that they keep getting better and better. Maybe This Christmas Tree picks up where Maybe This Christmas, Too left off in 2003 and introduces a new cast of indie rock and pop/rock favorites for another enjoyable holiday listen. Artists such as Pedro the Lion and Lisa Loeb do their own renditions of traditional Christmas carols while English singer/songwriter Tom McRae, swing revivalists Royal Crown Revue, and Jars of Clay cover classics by other artists. Death Cab for Cutie's charming sweetness of the Phil Spector treasure "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" goes out to all the indie rock kids. It was previously unavailable and exclusively recorded for this collection just like "Christmas Time Was Here" by Ivy. The indie pop outfit honors the Vince Guaraldi standard while dressing it up just a bit with Dominique Durand's warm vocal delight and Andy Chase's lilting string arrangements. The neo-psychedelic pop commune, ...

Bumps CD music
$10.65 This limited edition of LEGACY: HYMNS & FAITH includes a bonus DVD video directed by Ken Carpenter.
Long before the Christian pop movement began exploding in the late '90s, Amy Grant was at the forefront of the movement, one of the first singers to show that pop music sensibilities could be successfully mated with spiritual concerns outside the realm of gospel music. Ironically, it's the gospel tradition that Grant returns to on LEGACY: HYMNS & FAITH in order to celebrate her 25th anniversary as a recording artist (hard to believe it's been so long, isn't it?).
Though she draws mostly on traditional spiritual material here, as the album's title indicates, the production is consistently innovative. ...
