Because Susperia include ex-members of Satyricon (guitarist Terje Andersen, aka Cyrus) and Dimmu Borgir (drummer Kenneth Åkesson, aka Tjodalv), many people have assumed that their focus is black metal; Satyricon and Dimmu Borgir, after all, are among Norway's best-known black metal bands. But even if Susperia's earlier releases had some relevance to black metal, there is nothing black metal about their fourth full-length album, Cut from Stone. This 2006 recording/2007 release offers a blend of thrash metal and alternative metal, drawing on influences that include Sepultura, Anthrax, Testament, and Exodus. The songs are melodic yet intense and forceful, and shredding guitars are the rule. Some black metal aficionados who associate Cyrus with Satyricon and know Tjodalv from Dimmu Borgir will be disappointed to hear that Cut from Stone is devoid of black metal content, but then, Susperia were never a straight-ahead black metal band -- not even in the late '90s -- and they never claimed to be a carbon copy of Satyricon, Dimmu Borgir, or anyone else in black metal. Therefore, Cut from Stone should not be judged by black metal standards (or, for that matter, death metal standards). It needs to be judged by thrash metal/speed metal standards and alternative metal standards, and when those standards are applied, it is clear that Cut from Stone is a decent thrash/alt-metal effort -- not mind-blowing, but decent. Some of the credit for Cut from Stone's creative success goes to Daniel Bergstrand, the album's producer. Bergstrand, who has worked with metal bands ranging from In Flames to Dark Funeral to Meshuggah, knows what he's doing -- and his guidance and direction works out fairly well for Susperia on this 47-minute CD. ~ Alex Henderson

5 stars Another Strong Performance
The natural successor to Unlimited. Varied collection of songs that shows yet more maturity in the writing. This album kicks where it has to and soothes in all the right places.Still puzzled why this band have not broken through.

Therion mastermind Christofer Johnsson has never recovered from hearing the choir come in at the end of Ozzy Osbourne's "Diary of a Madman." While 2002's Secret of the Runes, a conceptual work celebrating the nine different worlds of Norse mythology, was technically flawless and endlessly atmospheric, its orchestral and choral wall of sound seemed pasted on rather than successfully integrated into the electric onslaught. After a two-year hiatus, Therion return with not one but two records, the blistering, elegiac, and overall stunning Lemuria/Sirius B. This time around, the Scandinavian heavy metal equivalent of the Moody Blues eulogizing a Viking funeral have mastered their dark art and created the finest record of ...

The unprecedented worldwide success of multinational British-based power metallers DragonForce has cast an unexpected light upon German speed metal trailblazers Helloween. Perhaps the first band to convincingly combine thrash metal intensity with the melody and majestic imagery of the NWOBHM, and by extension the blueprint upon which DragonForce based their "extreme power metal" style, Helloween were a heavy metal institution, but one that had very much fallen by the wayside upon the departure of classic-era singer Michael Kiske and founder/guitarist Kai Hansen in the mid-'90s. Singer Andi Deris has been a permanent fixture ever since, but the band has found stable lineups difficult to come by, and the quality of material has been equally inconsistent. Following 2005's Keeper of The Seven Keys: The Legacy, on which the band attempted to revive the style of their mid-'80s classics, Gambling with the Devil is a little more calculated. The appearance of Saxon mainstay Biff Byford on the intro track "Crack the Riddle" is all too foreboding, however: for all its enthusiasm, Gambling with the Devil is unbending, inelastic, and ...

D12's initial success was certainly aided by the high-profile presence of member Eminem, as well as lyrics that took his provocative topics to another twisted, incendiary level. However, D12 also consists of five other Detroit rappers, who were already established and respected before Eminem blew up larger than life. Their debut, DEVIL'S NIGHT, proved to be a witty, irreverent ride. On the follow-up album's mischievous first single, "My Band," the group hilariously (and self-deprecatingly) dissects Slim Shady, its greatest blessing and curse, while revealing an array of skills on the mic. D12 WORLD should put to rest any dubious notions about the collective. These are six like-minded guys with lightning-quick intellects to match their warped thoughts. "Just Like U" is a deft combination of whimsy and dark brutality, as crew member Bizarre gives "advice" to a child, playfully parodying similar songs by other rappers ("Nas gonna probably hate me/When Mos Def hear this, he probably gonna suffocate me"). However, when they do get serious, as on "Good Die Young," a tribute to former D12 member Bugz (who was shot and killed in 1999) and other fallen friends, the result is achingly ...
Innocent Victim
Uriah Heep Innocent Victim CD  (1977) Bonus Tracks

Cut From Stone CD music
CD $8.79  4 stars Top 500
This 1977 album from British progressive rockers Uriah Heep features nine classic tracks. After breaking in new vocalist John Lawton on the back-to-basics outing Firefly, Uriah Heep once again found themselves feeling the need to experiment a bit on Innocent Victim. The resulting album doesn't cohere as neatly as Firefly did, but manages to keep the listener engaged thanks to a combination of slick performances from the band and a handful of truly great Uriah Heep songs. Overall, Innocent Victim's blend of sharp, short rockers and pop-friendly ballads feels like an attempt to court the American AOR market. The rockers are all pretty strong stuff: "Free 'n' Easy" is a fast-moving tune built on an ear-scorching guitar riff that feels like boogie rock in overdrive, while "Roller" is a stylish midtempo track that blends funky, languid verses with a faster, bass-driven chorus that ups the song's rock quotient. The band also weaves in some experimental tracks that hit the bull's eye: "Illusion" is a spacy tale about dreaming that creates a rich atmosphere through an arrangement built on strong keyboard and vocal textures, while "The Dance" successfully marries a reggae beat to its prog-like melody. Meanwhile, the album's ballad leanings brought Uriah Heep one of their biggest international hits in the form of ...
