On only their third album, Minus Story complete the same transformation that took the Flaming Lips close to two decades, from sprawling punk psychedelia into a relatively concise form of indie rock that subsumes the band's early taste for noisy experimentation into surprisingly catchy pop songs. Highlights include the warped 1970s soft-rock vibe of "Pretty in the Light" and "Beast At My Side" and the clattering, Pavement-like rock of "Aaron."

My Ion Truss album
$10.79 On this immensely appealing debut, SILENT ALARM, the London-based quartet Bloc Party fulfills the promise of their barnstorming 2004 singles "Banquet" and "She's Hearing Voices." Led by magnetic frontman Kele Okereke, the band extracts the most fascinating aspects of the previous 25 years of British indie rock and fuses them into a new entity--complete with smarts and heart--never delving into retro-kitsch or slavish imitation.
Okerere's urgent yelp most often recalls a fired-up incarnation of the Cure's Robert Smith, but the ...

| | Ocean Aeolian CD (2006)
My Ion Truss music CDs
$10.75 The Swedish metal band the Ocean's ambitious collection of intense, monolithic music is made more user-friendly by the inclusion of a half-dozen guest vocalists, including the former Coalesce singer Sean Ingram and Converge's Nate Newton. With less emphasis on the complexities of the band's previous FOGDIVER, AEOLIAN is a gripping, undeviating set of heavy metal.
"Aeolian" is the heavier twin of the 2004 release "Fluxion". Both albums were recorded in one long session, which lasted from January 2004 until July 2005, in the band's own Oceanland studio. The album was mastered by Magnus Lindberg (CULT OF LUNA) at the Tonteknik studio in Umea, Sweden. While "Fluxion" mixed the orchestral and atmospheric side of its predecessor "Fogdiver" with harsh vocals and complex metal passages, "Aeolian" develops all this fusion even further: the orchestral parts have been relegated to the background, the songs are heavier and more complex, and the arrangements are totally uncompromising. However, this is not necessarily the direction in which the band is headed, but a result of the choice of songs on offer - THE OCEAN won't move away ...

My Ion Truss music CDs
$13.15 Review Seven Days magazine: a music Editor who "gets it"TIMOTHY JAMES & HIFIDELIC, MAGIC SUMMER DAYS (Firebreathing)Timothy James must be one happy guy. Like, obnoxiously happy. Perhaps it’s my jaded East Coast effrontery, but generally speaking, perky, happy-go-lucky folks drive me to drink. Although, to be fair, lots of stuff drives me to drink. Rainy days. Sunny days. Boredom. Over-stimulation. Happiness. Sadness. Jam bands. Tuesdays. But I digress. Back to the point, Mr. James must be one happy guy, and his latest recording, Magic Summer Days, is the sort of album I once would have dismissed as written by someone who’d undergone a frontal lobotomy and had access to some seriously high-test pharmaceuticals. Well, perhaps I’m softening in my old age, but I really dig the Bay Area transplant’s new disc. Just don’t tell my monthly Nick Drake-fan support/suicide-watch group.First things first: This album is cheesy. Unabashedly cheesy. Gloriously cheesy. Triumphantly cheesy. It’s Hall and Oates cheesy. But goddamn it if it isn’t good.James and his six-piece band Hifidelic know exactly what they’re doing. Much like Paul Verhooven knew he was making a commercially unviable cult classic with the audaciously unerotic cheese-fest Showgirls. James and Co. have crafted an homage to a bygone era when big mustaches and butterfly collars ruled the clubs and blue-eyed Mellotron soul ruled the airwaves. Burt Bacharach would be proud.I could give you a track-by-track rundown, but it seems unnecessary. There isn’t a cut on the record that lacks groovy, psychedelic charm. It’s that sort of Dean Martin-as-Matt Helm — or, for the kiddies, Mike Meyers-as-Austin Powers — groovy that harkens to a more innocently sexy time. There are moments of Steely Dan-esque rockin’. And there are some nifty dual guitar licks that hint at more sinister motives. But most of the disc is as sunny and hepcat-cool as the title suggests.Warning: This disc is probably not for everyone. Those of you who prefer music that really means something, man, might want to stay away. But that’s not to say there’s no meaning in Timothy James & the Hifidelic’s work. It just means that sunny California lounge-rock is alive and well in the cold Northeast. And we should be happy about that. ...
