(1 Customer Review)
Steve Albini is as legendary for his fiercely independent and uncompromising values as for his work as a producer and ex-frontman for such iconic underground rock bands as Big Black. Albini's integrity and dedication to raw, intense music remains intact with Shellac, his on-again/off-again project with bassist Bob Weston and drummer Todd Trainer. EXCELLENT ITALIAN GREYHOUND (2007), the band's fifth album and first since 2000's 1000 HURTS, is among the band's best work.
Although the disc stays true to Shellac's strident noise-rock ethos and hardcore-influenced thunder, there's a maturity here born of the musicians' distinguished resumes and their history with each other. The interplay and sense of exploration recalls a jazz ensemble at times, even when the commitment to sonic confrontation keeps the band firmly connected to Albini's punk and post-punk past. So while there's no shortage of gut-wrenching, brain-melting squall on EXCELLENT ITALIAN GREYHOUND, the intricacy and art with which it's applied represent a band at the top of their game.

Uncut (p.94) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[With] Bob Weston's driving bass and Todd Trainer's thrashing snare hits, coalescing with mechanical precision." Excellent Italian Greyhound Music Shellac Excellent Italian Greyhound Songs Excellent Italian Greyhound Music Excellent Italian Greyhound Music Review Average Rating: (3 out of 5 stars) Not As Good As At Action Park This is not as good as the debut At Action Park, but it is better than Terraform and 1000 Hurts. The End Of Radio is a long, drawn out tedious song reminiscent of the first track off of Terraform, with repeating riff and lyrics. Genuine Lulabelle seems like Steve was making it up as he went along, and is pretty much a throwaway song. Kittypants is a nice little instrumental that brings a smile to my face. Tracks 2, 3, 7, and 8 are all pretty good, but I think Spoke, track 9, is probably the best, and it's also the hardest. The thing that makes this album a little bit better is that Steve uses his "outside" voice again, instead of trying to sing melodies all the time. Way better than the previous two attempts, but still lacking. Submitted by Jeremy (Cleveland, OH, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Purchase Excellent Italian Greyhound CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Bloc Party Silent Alarm CD (2005)
Excellent Italian Greyhound album
$10.79 On this immensely appealing debut, SILENT ALARM, the London-based quartet Bloc Party fulfills the promise of their barnstorming 2004 singles "Banquet" and "She's Hearing Voices." Led by magnetic frontman Kele Okereke, the band extracts the most fascinating aspects of the previous 25 years of British indie rock and fuses them into a new entity--complete with smarts and heart--never delving into retro-kitsch or slavish imitation.
Okerere's urgent yelp most often recalls a fired-up incarnation of the Cure's Robert Smith, but the sounds the group creates echo everything from Gang of Four's staccato militarism ("Banquet") to the reverberating guitars of the Chameleons ("Price of Gas"). At times, Bloc Party also recalls the ecstatic soundwashes of early-1990s cult pioneers like Ride ("Plans") and Slowdive ("Compliments"). Lyrically, Okerere tilts toward an endearing adolescent pessimism that, even when the music is less than mopey, gives him away as a goth at heart ("and the ravens are leaving the tower/make your peace"). However, at the end of "Price of Gas," when he proclaims "I can tell you how this ends/We're going to win this," one can hope that Okerere is expressing his confidence in a bright future for his extremely talented band.

| | Black Heart Procession Spell CD (2006) Digipak
Excellent Italian Greyhound CD music
$12.95 THE SPELL, the seventh release from San Diego's the Black Heart Procession, combines the band's early minimalist tendencies with the rock richness of 2002's AMORE DEL TROPICO. The Procession still wade in dark, melancholic waters, offering up Gothic Americana soundscapes of bleak introspection, but on the aptly named THE SPELL ...
| | Junior Boys So This Is Goodbye CD (2006)
Excellent Italian Greyhound music CDs
$11.65 While Junior Boys' debut indie sleeper LAST EXIT leaned more toward pastiche--a product of influences as far afield as 2-step garage and Timbaland's stutter-funk--their sophomore effort, SO THIS IS GOODBYE, is a step toward pop song form (albeit of the slowly unfurling, ...
| | Melvins Senile Animals CD (2006)
Excellent Italian Greyhound songs
$13.09 Crover is a brutal enough drummer on his own, but the addition of Coady Willis on a second kit both increases the power of the assault and keeps things curiously off-kilter; Jared Warren's bass is all rumbling fuzz and punch and provides an impressive platform for Crover's art-metal riffage; and the multilayered vocals make the whole thing that much more colossal. The Melvins have always been something of a grab bag, and while it's a safe bet ...

| | Battles Mirrored CD (2007)
Excellent Italian Greyhound CD music
$12.25 If modern day indie music appears to consist of an endless queue of groups that are either bland emo retreads or glitzy disco punkers, it is then that much more refreshing to encounter a band like Battles. With a lineage that consists of some of indie rock's most accomplished musicians, Battles is a veritable neo-prog supergroup, though one that embraces the possibilities of technology used in tandem with instrumental virtuosity.
MIRRORED, the band's debut full-length makes its intent clear from the onset--to ingest 50 years of rock history and regurgitate it as fractilized micro-symphonies. Rhythms bounce whimsically from motorik krautrock beats to glammed up T. Rex shuffles; such stop-on-a-dime surprises seem to be offered up at every turn. Tyondai Braxton's bizarre vocal gibberish--pitched ...

| | Antonio Carlos Jobim Terra Brasilis CD (1980)
Excellent Italian Greyhound songs
$11.19 Antonio Carlos Jobim fans are very much split on the topic of arranger Claus Ogerman. They tend to either love the albums Ogerman did with Jobim--TIDE and WAVE are the best-known--or dismiss them outright as over-orchestrated near-easy-listening tripe. Released in 1980, the double album-length TERRA BRASILIS is the last of the Jobim-Ogerman collaborations, but it's just as controversial as the earlier ones. The 20 tracks, taken from all eras of Jobim's career going right ...
