Boney James Ride CD (2001)
20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of Nina Simone buy CD music RIDE was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Pop Instrumental Album.
For his eighth release RIDE, jazzy saxophonist and keyboardist Boney James picks up where he left off navigating deftly from smooth jazz to R&B and back again. While loyal listeners will quickly recognize that they've been over Boney's familiar terrain before, smooth jazz fans will undoubtedly find this ride veering more deeply into rhythm-and-blues territory as James keeps a steady balance of both.
James gets things going right from the start with singer Trina Broussard's soulful vocals warmly inviting us to hop aboard on "Heaven." The journey picks up pace as it works it way through the jazzy "Grand Central" before stepping it up with "RPM," the CD's curiously aerobic-paced mover. With the help of R&B crooners Dave Hollister and Jahiem, James playfully steers listeners through pleasing melodic ballads before adding backbone to the upbeat "See What I'm Sayin'?" courtesy of bass mastermind and producer Marcus Miller. This ride saves the best for last with "This Is The Life," as Andy Narell's steel pans and Paulinho DaCosta's percussion add just the right amount of Caribbean flavor to the robust, jazzy closer.

20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of Nina Simone album for sale THE COMPLETE COLUMBIA STUDIO RECORDINGS (1965-1968) includes every track from the albums E.S.P., MILES SMILES, SORCERER, NEFERTITI, MILES IN THE SKY as well as portions of WATER BABIES, CIRCLE IN THE ROUND, DIRECTIONS and FILLES DE KILIMANJARO that featured the quintet. Recorded between January 20, 1965 and June 21, 1968. Includes liner notes by Michael Cuscuna, Todd Coolman and Bob Belden.
Digitally remastered by Mark Wilder and Rob Schwarz (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York).
THE COMPLETE COLUMBIA STUDIO RECORDINGS (1965-1968) won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Album Notes and was nominated for Best Boxed Recording Package.
After hiring Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Tony Williams for the New York sessions of SEVEN STEPS TO HEAVEN, Miles Davis combed through a series of saxophonists until settling on Wayne Shorter to complete his second great quintet. From their first complete recording as a unit, E.S.P. (1965), to their last session for FILLES DE KILIMANJARO (1968), this group profoundly changed the face of modern jazz. This recorded history has been beautifully preserved and presented in this staggering collection, THE COMPLETE COLUMBIA STUDIO RECORDINGS 1965-68.
From the beginning it is evident that the music herein is of an unmatched quality and power. The genius of Hancock, the melodic invention of Shorter, the solidity of Carter's foundation and the thundering torrent of Williams all gels into a cohesive symphony of sound under the guiding hand of the Prince of Darkness, himself. The listener is able to trace the development of each member's compositional prowess and its effect on Davis' musical approach throughout the group's tenure. Each successive disc illustrates how the group explored uncharted musical territory with each session. Eventually, Davis would take his art in a new, more electric direction, thus ending this important period of jazz history.
6cds 1965-1968. Deluxe Longbox Package.

Les Paul Crazy Rhythm CD (2005)
20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of Nina Simone CD music It's virtually impossible to imagine modern music without the contributions of Les Paul. Not only was he a brilliant jazz guitarist with no fear of pop or country, he literally laid the framework for how a good electric guitar should be made when he designed his famous Les Paul model for Gibson Guitars. Add in the fact that he single-handedly invented multi-track recording with the release of "Lover" in 1948, and his influence is pervasive, if not always acknowledged, even in today's 21st century hip-hop world. This delightful collection brings together rare 16" radio transcription discs Paul did in 1944 and 1945, shortly after he was discharged from the U.S. Armed Forces. Although billed as a trio, the band here is really a quartet, with Paul on lead guitar, Cal Gooden, Jr. on rhythm guitar, Clint Nordquist on upright bass, and probably Bob Armstrong on piano (Paul used several piano players during this time period, but Armstrong is the most likely candidate for these sessions). The music is smooth and elegant swing, featuring delightfully unexpected stops, starts, and redirects, all tempered by Paul's liquid guitar lines, full of brilliant sustained notes. Highlights include a cover of Isham Jones' 1923 hit "Who's Sorry Now" (which became an even bigger hit for Connie Francis in 1958), an expansive version of Cole Porter's "What Is This Thing Called Love," and an elegant take on Hoagy Carmichael's "Lazy River." The real treats, though, are the three tracks that close the disc, featuring Paul's band plus vocals from the sultry Kay Starr and the violin playing of the great Joe Venuti. Smooth and fresh as rainwater running off a leaf, the transcriptions that make up Crazy Rhythm don't sound dated at all, and the sound is clear as a bell. Paul's most innovative and representative recordings were still in the future when these sessions were held, but the joyful elegance in his playing was already well established. ~ Steve Leggett

Da Lench Mob Guerillas in tha Mist CD (1992)
20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of Nina Simone album for sale Looking like a cross between the Black Panthers and the Zapatistas on the album cover, Da Lench Mob fully embrace an urban revolutionary rhetoric consistent with their image. Unrepentantly political music of any sort can be difficult to listen to -- particularly when it is almost blindly angry and coming from an inherently (though understandably) biased point of view, and also when it sidesteps some of the subtleties of the issues it raises. Guerillas in tha Mist, the group's debut album, is guilty of all those things, and yet it is an often brilliant, always invigorating, sometimes infuriating scowl of an album. The album is a relentless onslaught of attitude, but it is not misplaced vehemence or finger-wagging.The final song on the album is titled "Inside tha Head of a Black Man," and that is exactly the psychic and psychological space that Guerillas in tha Mist occupies: confused, chaotic, complex, righteous, angry, and turbulent, but also permeated with a sense of braggadocio and looseness. Just because they have trouble on their mind doesn't mean they can't swing, too, and Ice Cube's production does just that, especially on tunes such as "All on My Nut Sac," "Freedom Got an A.K.," and the title track. He loads the songs with rolling fatback bass and funky keyboard riffs, and fills in every empty space with some sort of noise, generally a horn or siren or whistle. When listening to Guerillas in tha Mist, it is virtually impossible to catch your breath; in fact, it is so powerfully urgent that it feels as if you've just been punched in the gut. But when experiencing something this significant and consequential, you shouldn't want the blow to be pulled just to increase your comfort level. ~ Stanton Swihart

John Coltrane Live At The Village Vanguard: The Master Takes CD (1998)
20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of Nina Simone CD music Recorded live at The Village Vanguard, New York, New York on November 2 & 3, 1961. Includes liner notes by David A. Wild.
Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Erick Labson (MCA Music Media Studios).
Thanks to "My Favorite Things," John Coltrane became a jazz star, and soon received one of the most lucrative contracts ever proffered to a jazz artist when he signed with Impulse. There, with the recording of AFRICA/BRASS in the spring of 1961, Coltrane instigated a series of historic sessions that changed the shape of jazz forever. LIVE AT THE VILLAGE VANGUARD marked his first collaboration with producer Bob Thiele, who realized that Coltrane was an obsessive perfectionist in the studio, never satisfied with his performance. By presenting him live, in all his raw, spontaneous glory, on a particularly inspired evening, Thiele documented the searching, dangerous quality in Coltrane's music.
In McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones and Reggie Workman, Coltrane had found an ideal rhythm section. Their earthy vigor, elemental beat and harmonically flexible sensibility transform the simple 3/4 structure of "Spiritual" into a dreamy, dancing ritual--Coltrane's tenor acting the part of the preacher, while Eric Dolphy's bass clarinet depicts a parishioner speaking in tongues. Pianist Tyner adds another dimension with his resolute harmonic cycles, spritely leads and unique chordal clusters, and his playing on "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise" is indicative of the pianist's lyrical quality, setting the stage for Coltrane's fervent soprano flight.
The saxophonist's sixteen-minute tenor adventure, "Chasin' The Trane," is the stuff that legends are made of. Beginning with an elemental blues riff, Coltrane ranges up and down on his horn, expanding upon fragments of the melody, modulating around repeated figures like a blues guitarist, descending into the lower reaches of his horn then rising up to a hollering amen, as Jones rises to match each phrase with polyrhythmic fury. Coltrane keeps extending his line until he trances out on his own rhythmic incantations, prefiguring a motif from "A Love Supreme" before dissolving in a series of hair-raising cries and hollers. It is a thrilling performance, as Coltrane dances on the razor's edge, naked and exposed--the creative testimony of a great explorer in the throes of the spirit.

King Crimson EleKtriK CD (2003)
20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of Nina Simone buy CD music ELEKTRIK documents King Crimson's tour of Japan in support of their 2003 album THE POWER TO BELIEVE, which was still their most recent studio recording at the time of this concert disc's reissue in '09. There's no looking back on past glories here; the set list is almost entirely from POWER TO BELIEVE and its 2000 predecessor, THE CONSTRUKCTION OF LIGHT. As such, it finds Robert Fripp, Adrian Belew, and company working their patented whisper-to-a-scream dynamics like the master craftsmen they are -- rock maniacs one moment and subtle ambient experimentalists the next.
Personnel: Adrian Belew (vocals, guitar); Trey Gunn (guitar, fretless guitar); Robert Fripp (guitar, sound effects); Pat Mastelotto (keyboards, drums).

Machines For Hire CD (2008)
20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of Nina Simone songs After decades of cerebral germination, composer Lee Varkin throws a wrench in the rusty cogs to start the motion of a new set; the interpretation of experiences into something audible. The result is the first release of MACHINES FOR HIRE.
Using his fascination for sound, Lee manipulates synths, metallic objects, and other items to construct an instrumental soundtrack for mental states, memories, a bizarre dream, and personal outlooks - all accompanied by an underlying sense of a creeping dystopia.
However, Lee's vision isn't intended to be perceived exactly like his. It's meant to be absorbed, allowing an individual's reactions to be explored in their own unique form.
"Whatever." -Lee Varkin
