Are you in the mood to inflict a headache upon yourself? If the answer is yes, then no problem -- slap on your headphones, load up the 2007 release by the Number Twelve Looks Like You, Mongrel, hit play, and voilą!, you should soon get your wish. This is certainly one of the "busiest" rock releases you're likely to hear, as it appears that the Number Twelve Looks Like You's main goal is to cram as much musical activity as humanly possible into each composition. And the gentlemen are quite adept at their respective instruments -- it's pretty intimidating to think how much practice and woodshedding they must have endured to get these complicated math formula-esque compositions sounding just right. The bandmembers have obviously studied their Mars Volta and Dillinger Escape Plan albums from front to back, as evidenced by such supersonic freakouts as "Imagine Nation Express," "El Pinata de la Muerte," and the delightfully titled "Alright, I Admit It...It Was a Whore House." Both intense and complex, there's very little room for error on Mongrel. ~ Greg Prato

$7.99 Legendary spoken-word icon Butch Willis kicks off the 2001 version of the Teenbeat Records sampler series with "Amateur on Plastic." His crazed coffeehouse rant is followed by Jonny Cohen's ode to Washington D.C., simply called "Washington D.C." These label samplers work best when they serve as a record label's opportunity to put their best foot forward. Teenbeat Records started out as a way for Mark Robinson to record and distribute the D.C. area's brightest independent rock and pop bands. While the label has stretched out to include artists from all over the world, it remains the preeminent label for Washington D.C.-area indie rock and pop. Highlights on Teenbeat Sampler 2001 include the computerized vocals of Brooklyn's tha Cheeky Bastid on their track "Money on You," as well as the sweet vocals of Tracy Shedd on the simple and serene "Circles." The Long Goodbye epitomize everything a Teenbeat band should be. The brazen, pop-filled hooks on their track "Fashion ...
| | Pixies Trompe Le Monde CD (1991) Remastered
Mongrel album
$10.35 The title might be French for "fool the world," but with Trompe le Monde, the Pixies weren't fooling anyone: this was essentially Black Francis' solo debut. It focuses on Francis' sci-fi fascination and lacks any Kim Deal songs; even her backing vocals are far and few between. Yet the band sounds revitalized on Trompe le Monde, as if it were planned as their last hurrah. The raucous "Distance Equals Rate Times Time" and the explosive cover of the Jesus and Mary Chain's "Head On" are fairly straightforward, but the lyrics remain quirky on "Planet of Sound," a song about a Martian who lands on Earth, and "Palace of the Brine," a tribute to sea monkeys and Utah's Salt Lake. He even disses hipsters and pretentious students -- basically, the Pixies' fan base -- with nasty little digs like "Subbacultcha"'s "I was wearing ...

| | Throw Rag Desert Shores CD (2003)
Mongrel music CDs
$11.65 Throw Rag's approach to punk rock is refreshing and yet still time-honored. "Space Hump Me" has a lot of early-'70s punk in it, particularly with the sneering vocals and simple arrangement such as the Damned. Lead singer Captain Sean-Doe never lets loose as the song is wild but still quite tight, much like "Hollywood," which appears later. "Hang Up" continues the party rock atmosphere as more guitars are brought to the fore. However, they mix rockabilly and punk beautifully, especially on "Rule Maker," a tune that could easily be on a Social Distortion album. Performing what they dubbed "sailor rock," "Mission's Message" is the first track that sounds ordinary at best and more like filler despite an exciting guitar solo. The group returns to its strengths with the head-bobbing, fist-pumping "Bag of Glue," another hard punk tune with a washboard thrown in. "Beware of the Dog" is a rock tune seemingly dusted off from the '70s, but Throw Rag deliver it flawlessly. The punk rock gives way to a harder no-nonsense ...
| | Marion James Essence CD (2003)
Mongrel songs
$12.15 Born and raised in Nashville, Tennessee, Marion James grew up in a family with a love for music. Her mother played piano in church, her sister sang gospel for the Claire Ward Singers, her uncle played guitar and banjo, and several of her cousins were professional musicians. Like most great R&B singers, Marion's musical background is firmly rooted in the church. As a child, James first experience with blues music came from watching vaudeville shows, checking out local performers or listening to her mother's record collection of 78s. During the early 1960's, Marion's touring band included guitarist, Jimi Hendrix, and bassist, Billy Cox. Their live performances electrified audiences throughout the South. In 1966, she recorded the top-ten hit "That's My Man" for Nashville's Excello Records. The track featured legendary blues guitarist, Johnny Jones (Bobby Blue Bland) and Marion's husband, trumpeter/arranger Jimmy Stuart. Stuart also arranged horn charts for such notable artists as Junior Parker and Bobby Blue Bland. Marion continued performing till the mid 1980s when she decided to take a long overdue break from the road.In the early 90s, Marion met guitarist Casey Lutton. She began to perform with his group, The Hypnotics. Several years later, she and this funky outfit recorded an album for the Italian label, Appaloosa Records. Since then, Marion has shared the stage with Rufus Thomas, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, Chick Willis, and many others! She's played to sold-out audiences in Europe and the Southeastern United States. Recently, Marion will be part of an exhibition at the Country Music Hall of Fame. "Night Train to Nashville: Music City Rhythm & Blues 1945-1970" ...
